the piston might be in a couple of large pieces being held together by the rings or you might have just knocked a small piece off of a ringland and it bumped the plug before it got shot out the exhaust. maybe even both things happened. you need a new motor.

if it were mine and i needed the truck i would just drive it easy till i was ready to swap it out. a stock 6.0 is prety cheap.

dude, your motor is hurt....I would not drive it to the corner for coffee....if you want to risk being stranded on the roadside with a pistion hangin out of the side of your block, fine.....I would not suggest driving that truck anywhere until you have confirmed the noise.

Not sure what the reserve is at but worth a shot, He is in Tennessee and quotes shipping to NH would be $400. Not too bad for a short block.

how much is a rental car? how much is a tow? the motor might not get him to the cofie shop but it probably will and probably would drive another few thousand miles.

like i said before, this has come up many times, then people drive for 6 more months before the pull the motor out. when they do they are suprized the piston falls apart in their hands when they pull it out of the motor. i find it prety suprizing they go as long as they do with that kind of damage but this is what i have seen. the choice is his and now he has two opinions on the subject.

so what you are saying is go out and drive a wounded motor? risk destroying it when it could be fixable......sounds like poor advise to me...but what do I know.

Its cheaper just to swap in an entire new motor than to rebuild the old one, with that in mind I would drive it and who cares if it throws a rod. Itd be cheaper to pay for a tow 1 time or get AAA to pay

than to get for a rental until the new motor arives.

He says he was thinking about a 6.0 swap anyways, depends on what he wants to do. It would be expensive to fix something on the lower end like a piston and a waste of money to turn around and do a 6.0 swap later, so I would probably drive it till it blew up too, just make sure the cell is charged. If it were something easy like a spring or a bent push rod, then I might agree also not to drive it.

wow....more power to you guys....I understand he wants to do a swap, I am looking at the issue of being stuck somplace without a running vehicle and towing/lodgeing costs.....

My point is, identify the noise and go from there....if it is just a sping, or just this or just that it may be fixable in a cost effective manner....but driving it until it lets loose is irresponsible IMO.

Is the knocking based on engine speed or vehicle speed? Like if you revv it up past say, 3,500 will the knock go a way?
