Question Location of MAF critical?

I'm going to make my own air intake system or modify something off the shelf. I plan on using the stock air box initially for this project. My question is would it be better to mount the MAF closer to the throttle body to get a better more accurate reading of the intakes temp right at the motor rather than where its comming in from the air filter's location. Would the gains be to small to even notice moving the MAF? Maybe response would be better? It seems on the cars its allot closer to the throttle body, that is why I'm asking before I go and make something thats a pain in the *** for little or nothing.

To get the most accurate reading, i've heard it should be in a straight section of the intake so the air isn't turbulent when it passes over the sensor wires.

I don't think you'd gain anything from moving it closer to the TB.

Actually on and LT1, the throttle response is far better, not sure on an non-LT1. MPG and overall performance has no change...just better throttle response.
