- 1995 Chev 1500 EC/SB Z71 w/ 5.7
-- 76K miles an no problems (towed same stuff)
- 1999 Chev 2500 EC/SB 4x4 w/ 6.0
-- 58K miles no problems (driven hard + towing)
-- Terrible MPGs (11.5 after exhaust mods)
-- Just ready for a new truck
- 2004 GMC 1500 EC/SB 4x4 w/ 5.3
-- Only 6K so far, but, damn it's nice
-- No Chev this time, liked the GMC look better (whine)
-- 16.5 ave MPG is nice too, maybe Nelson Tune will be even better
Plus, Dad owned 3 Chev & 1 GMC (79 - 85 year made) for his business
-- All had 100K+ & usually loaded up to 2000 lbs with sinks/tubs/etc
-- Just replaced tires, brakes, belts, hoses
I don't think you'll have problems with either truck, but the GMs definitely look the best. Good luck

I vote for the chevy. If he doesn't want a chevy then get a Ford, theyre reliable as all hell, just slow.

My friends dad has had 2 Tacoma's since they came out one was a 01 and now he has an 04 double cab. It looks alright but the interior styling is not my taste. It's like they skimp on interior design.
I think GM's make the best car's on the road. Of course occaisonally I get pissed at the little crap that goes wrong but all in all I think they are the best. In the past 15 years or so my dad has had 3 GM truck's.
88 GMC Sierra Stepside 5.7 it now has 325k or so on original engine and im pretty sure orginal trans, my uncle still drives it.
99 GMC Sierra ECSB SLE 5.3 2wd it has around 165k now (my truck). It runs awesome for the miles. Interior is holding up well and still looks damn good when I clean it out.
04 Silverado ECSB Stepside 5.3 2wd, I think it has 20k or so on it and no complaints.
For my dad's business we have 2 01 RCSB Silverado's 1 4WD and 1 2WD, both with around 140k. No problems yet.
They also have an 04 RCSB Silverado with 65k on it and no problems so far.
We have always had GM products and have never been let down. Stick with GM and you can't go wrong. If your dad insists on going import truck then get a Titan. Nissan's make the toughest trucks in the world. They will run forever no matter how hard you run them.

I sold my '79 BIG 10 (heavy half ton) a few years ago. it had rolled the clocks over to 000000 5 times and showed 85k when I sold it. by my calculations that is 585,000 miles. It was on its second engine and 3rd tranny (th350) the rearend had never even had the gear oil changed and it had the original drums. the power windows and locks still worked as did all the electrical. the front end was rebuilt ~350k and it still drove like a new truck when I sold it. A/C quit and it sat alot so I finally sold it.
My father bought that truck 2 weeks after I was born and gave it to me on my 16th birthday. I drove it until I was 22. damn I miss that truck.
is half a million miles good enough for your dad? I don't think you will find many tundras to go that distance.

I don't like to say it but I think the Tundra durability would probably be better. If you compared 1,000 of them versus the same # of GMs over 10 years, the ovreall record for the Jap ones would probably show less problems. However, some of the GM trucks would be as good or better in quality, etc, than the Toyotas.
My Sierra only has about 10k and so far is fine. I had a 78 G-10 with a 250 for about 110k that was great...only problem was at about 90k was a minor internal carb problem. Also had a 86 G-10 with a 305,auto,for about 125k;only problems were the choke pull-off and vacuum advance units got pinhole leaks after 6 years or so.
The GMs will probably be less money to maintain in the long haul because there are so many of them...abundance of new and used parts. GM has it,hands down,if you want to mod the truck at all.

I vote for the Chevy. My '02 had at least 42K miles on it when I traded it - and I didn't have a SINGLE problem with it. NOTHING. It rode/drove just like it was brand new.
This one is sneaking up on 30K, and I had to have it in once for a leaky front diff. Not a big deal - no cost to me. Otherwise, the thing has been EXCELLENT.
Actually, both had that slight steering rattle every now and then, but it doesn't bother me much for whatever reason. I don't see myself bringing this truck in for it - it's that slight.

I think GM and Toyota are closer than most people think.
On my Toyota truck the radiator had GM stamped into the plastic.
If you know someone that has a 1994 or newer Toyota truck look at the top
of the radiator and you will see GM stamped into the top of the radiator.
