Anyone know of a quick exterior way of telling these two motors apart? We all know by now that the heads are the same casting number and that the blocks probably have the same "6.0" cast on the front.

Is there any sort of serial number on the block that can identify the different motors w/o having to get to the pistons? Any other methods out there?

Ok, anyone heard of this?

A sticker on the end of the head labeled "FTF" means an LQ9 motor.

Hey Gregg - I don't know of any method. I'll look at mine for a FTF sticker and let you know. You are probably going have to pull a spark plug and feel for the LQ4 dish on the piston top.

On the PCM, if the 8th digit is an N, then its an LQ9. If its a U, then its a LQ4.

BBC572 - only have the motor in a crate, not in the vehicle.

Just hoping to find a way to confirm that a motor adveritised as an LQ9 is what it claims.

Isn't LQ9 from 2002 and up? I'm missing something...are you going from yard to yard?

LQ9's are H.O. 6.0L motors installed in newer Cadillac SUV's as well as Chevy SS trucks.
LQ4's are 6.0L motors installed in variuous GM & Chevy truck models incl SUV's. (still in production, w/ alluminum heads)
