Default LS6 cam vs. XR269HR for 4.8

im putting a 4.8 into my 96 GMC jimmy, i have the ls6 cam, but i was thinking since its not installed in the car, id like to put a decent cam in it, i have done some looking around here and it there seems to be quite a few running this cam, i will run a stall convertor if needed, the motor is stock with 241 heads, truck intake, either gonna be 98-99 f-body manifolds or sanderson shorties(1 1/2 primarys ) its gonna be a daily driver so id like to have decent drivability, would i be able to make 300-350 rwhp with the 4.8 and basic bolt ons?..

its just a number, if it doesnt make it 350whp i wont be disappointed, im sure it will make more power than my wore out 220k mile 4.3

and the only reason behind the 4.8 is its cheap, me and my buddy pulled it outta his 99 sierra to put a 6.0 in it, he is selling me the complete motor minus heads, throttle body, and wiring harness, comes with truck coils, truck intake, ls6 cam, PCM, LS1 MAF, all accessories with brackets, rocker arm assemblies, etc. for only $250....i thought it was a hell of a deal...like i said only thing its missing is the heads, TB and wiring harness, not shooting for a cheap swap, but i feel i can get the 4.8 into the jimmy for way less than $1500, making more power than a factory replacement 4.3, and probably making better fuel mileage

the 4.8 is a direct swap for a 6.0, so until i can find a 6.0 cheap enough for my tight ***, then this 4.8 will do....

I love that cam, it lopes pretty good in my 5.3

and if you want the most out of a cam, you need longtubes.

Long tubes under the hood of an already cramped Jimmy. It's not gonna happen for under $500 bucks custom made or an easy $700-1k for a shop to make them. The F-body manifolds do just fine, especially for a 4.8L.

As for which cam...CompCams XR259. 950-6800rpms in the 4.8L, whereas the XR269 is a 1500-7400 rpm cam in a 4.8L. It doesn't need all that. Less cam is better in a daily.

And InchUp can testify that a '01 z06 cam will pull plenty past 6000 RPM's in my 4.8L. Don't go bigger than a 205/215 duration cam if you want to keep any usable low end power. The 4.8L already is lacking torque in a fullsize truck so don't make it any worse
