Default Max displacement from 4.8/5.3 block?

I've been looking at that poor, lonely 4.8 just wasting away on the engine stand and started doing some thinking....

I've done a search, but have found some differing opinions on the matter. I've seen where one person went 0.120-over on the 4.8/5.3 block to the stock LS1 3.899 bore--even to the point of running BIG boost and BIG shots on it, with no problems (as of that post anyway, I think it was RECKLESS?) I'm assuming that the 4" stroker crank will work in the 4.8/5.3 block, which would make for a 382. Is it really safe to go 0.120-over on these blocks?

I mean 0.060-over and the 4" crank would still yield 370 cid, which isn't that bad at all.

Would it really be that much cheaper to start off with a 6.0L block, and get 400+ cubes, than to settle for the limits of the 4.8/5.3 block?

Interesting thought. 0.120 over w/ the stock 4.8 crank would be 312 cid.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to just start out with a 6.0 block? I don't think the high revver would be ideal for our trucks, but thats my .02

I guess that's my question--would it be worth the extra $$ to start off with a 6.0 if you already have a 4.8/5.3 block, and if the extra cubes would really be worth the extra money.

Is the 6.0 block inherently better than the 4.8/5.3 other than being able to take a larger bore?

Just "bench-storming" here. Not really looking seriously at doing anything with the motor, just thinking.

Well you know how they say there's no substitute for cubes.

granted. but couldn't you still make a decent motor out of it? i ask because i have a 5.3 sitting on the garage floor collecting dust that i'm starting on, and i'd like to know if it is possible to bore .120 over safely.
