Midpipe size ? 2.75 or 3 inch?
2005 Silverado 5.3L V8. In the process of replacing the entire system over the next few weeks (headers, cats, muffler, dual tail pipes).
The pipes from manifolds through cats are 2.5", up to the Y. The mid pipe between the Y and into the muffler is 2.75".
I am looking to run 2.5" dual pipes out from the muffler, and was planning on using a 3" SIDO (2.5" out) muffler. I was assuming the stock mid pipe was 3", but it is only 2.75".
First of all, is a 2.75" midpipe enough for higher flow (headers and air intake)? I would think 3" would be ok, but isn't 2 3/4" a little small with a few engine mods? Sure that'll cause more back pressure, etc., but I don't want a lot of back pressure!
Should I use the 2.75" midpipe or upgrade it to 3"?
Another option (one that I initially rulled out) is to run true duals (x-pipe, DIDO muffler, etc.), since a single mid-system setup costs less and should fit my current needs (unless I go forced induction).
The cheapest route will be to use the stock 2.75" mid pipe and adapt the end of it up to 3" into the muffler I have ready to put on. If this will not impact flow, then I'll do that.
Any experience or adive is highly appreciated.
