misfire/backfire
alright so recently i have been experiencing a backfire or misfire, i cant really tell. i have been trying to figure it out through various other threads ive started on other topics but this is is jsut baout my misfire or backfire. im sure most of you fellow post-aholics have read them so i dont need to go into GREAT depth explaining the issue other than im not sure if its a back fire or misfire. i jsut changed the plug wires, and the plugs look alright but ill be changing them again soon anyways.
does a misfire make any noise or is it silent? i experience this noise when im getting on the gas pretty good and start ~3200 rpm. it just goes pop pop pop and when it starts is kinda feels like the truck is falling on its face... it started after i installed my LT's.
no i havent gotten it tuned yet but it will happen this shortly.
is there anyway to check and see if my coil packs are still good or if they are wearing out? i assume they are quite expensive to replace..
how could i go by identifying the issue im experiencing and how can i fix the backfire or misfire, which ever it may be?

after i installed my longtubes, i had a horrible experience with missfires. The missfire isnt "silent" in a sense, you can put your truck in neutral, and rev it up at a constant rpm, i would say around 3000, and you will hear the miss in your exhaust, from what would be a normal noise, you will hear the "miss" in your exhaust note, it will be a "weak" pop. AND if you are missfiring, you will throw a code, i forget the acctuall code, but its for multiple missfires. You need to find smoeone with a diagnostic tool, and read for missfires. Also what plugs are you running right now?
If you have a constant missfire on one cylinder, i would suggest swapping that plug out first, or if you have a multimeter, test your wire. its the most inexpensive way to test, i hope your running a ngk plug, or something similar to that effect, not bosch, i had alot of missfire problems from the bosch pl4 plugs
after my truck had its horrible missfire problems, i swapped the wires i had MSD, for the old JBA wires i had, and it kinda idled istelf out, went and got the tune, great ever since. But i was running no cats for almost a year, and then put them back on along with the LT's, so my computer im sure was highly "confused". and just had to relearn, and get a new tune.
anywayz, i have some experience with the missifire issue, i deal with them all the time in my job, i work on GM diesels, detroits, cats, cummins ect.
i get alot of missfire issues with bad batches of fuel, water in the fuel, if your truck is falling on its face, that could be from a lack of power due to a fuel issue, and missfiring.
as far as testing the coils, i havent done that yet, im sure theres some way to test continuity and resistence in your coil packs, as of what the numbers should be, i would hope someone would chime in on that.
now BACKFIRING is usually from what i know, caused by lean fuel mixture, that is unignited in the cylinder, and gets pushed out into your exhaust, and then igniting there.
ive also heard of blown exhaust gaskets causing backfiring as well... but in your case, im not sure, i hope i helped out a little, ill be looking for your response

thanks for the input man, im running ngk tr55's right now but i guess its possible that i hit it with the LT during install before i figured out i had to remove them but ill be replacing them all this week. the sound is a weak pop pop pop pop. do ther codes you throw always throw the SES light too? because everytime i have this issue the light never comes on... but if i turn the key to the on position the SES light is thrown on.... im pretty sure at least, ill verify this for sure. yea on the wires, i just bought some new taylor 10.4 cuz the other ones got ripped up when i was removing them from the plugs, hopefully this doesnt happen again though i do stil have the stock ones. im going to replace the fuel filter as well so that should help too. if its a fuel problem. some one said my FPR could be going out as well but ill figure out how to check that another day. thanks for your help

hey bud
when i had my missfires, the ses light did come on when driving, within a few minutes, and i cleared the light, and it re appeared, as for the ses light being on when the truck is at run, i havent driven my truck in 9 months (in iraq right now ) but i think thats supposed to do that, like a lamp test? maybe i miss read what u said before. u could also try some fuel injector cleaner, clean out your fuel system also! i would recommend that too, and the new plugs should also help!! im sure u run premium gas as well.
how are you planning to change your fuel filter? i thought that was in the tank with the fuel pump?? being a 2000, do you have a in line fuel filter?? i know, i went hunting for mine, and found it to be in the fuel tank itself, some sort of LIFETIME pump, im not sure, anywayz, im always glad to help,
i was thinking if u had dirty injectors, u might not be getting much fuel, and causing a missfire there too!! leaning out the fuel mixture, putting unburned fuel into your exhaust, causing a POP maybe??? just getting thoughts, troubleshooting. its how i approach a problem, easiest fixes first.

i agree on the easiest fixes first, yea i have an inline fuel filter, just got the oil changed and had them change the filter as well, i have 3/4 of a tank now and i bought some lucas fuel treatment and ill be running that once it gets a little lower. i bought some new tr55's and will be putting those in soon. do you know if they are gapped correctly as per our application out of the box? im also gonna clean my air filter, install some shims etc easiest stuff first then ill get to doing the compression leakdown test for my oil consumption issues but i bought some oil additive that says itll help with that.

i think i found the culprit for my issue... talk about cracked.
yea its cracked all the way through on one side and just plain cracked on the other and the nipple is bent. maybe thats why i had misfire?
