Default Which muffler is best?

Has anyone done dyno comparisons on different mufflers? I've seen some knocking the Flowmasters and wonder why. <img border="0" alt="[driving]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_driving3.gif" />

Just look at any diagram of the inside of a flowmaster....they are very restrictive. They increase the bottom end some and sound good...that's about all. Most of the other mufflers' sounds are comparable and they are straight through mufflers...no restrictions.

I saw a magizine in a bookstore ( I was broke and couldn't buy it) about 6 months ago nocking Flows too. I am running Dynomax which was rated pretty well on their chart. They are a lot quieter than flows though.

the best: dynomax or magnaflow. between those two... its whichever name you think sounds better because they are basically the same in almost every aspect (performance, design, etc...)

dynomax ultraflow welded here though...

Dynomax and Magnaflow do have basicly the same design but the Magnaflow is supposedly a more quality product. I have friends with Dynomax's and they rust out within 2 years. My first Magnaflow also started getting a rust hole in it but was replaced with the lifetime warranty they come with. BTW.. I am very happy with the magnaflow setup I have now.

i have a borla powerset. i like it, sounds good. nice and mellow, wish it was a bit louder though. maybe i'm just used to the sound after driving for a while, or its my 2 10" subs that drown out the noise. anyways, it has good torque for towing my bassboat. a month ago i was visiting the B&B performance muffler website and they had a video of a silverado (reg cab, sportside) with a B&B muffler. wish mine sounded like the video. i tried accessing the website tonight so i could post it for some people, but i couldn't get through. i'll keep trying. i don't know too much about muffs but FYI.

in my opinion and many flow techs around, the flowmaster is the best muffler out there right now. reason being,,even with the odd flowpath of a flowmaster,,the v shaped thingy inside is called a vortex,,when the gasses pass over it there is a low pressure zone directly behind it that creates a vacuum,,therefore sucking the gases out. lots of different opinions are out there, but tons of tests have been done and the flowy allways comes out on top,i had a 3 inch magnaflow,,i liked it,,but it was too mellow for me,i switched to a large suv flowmaster 3.5 inch diameter and gained some hps as i could feel it,,i lost a tad bit of low end because of less back pressure but gained alot of hard pulling mid and upper rpms,,,also,,this is kind of what us light ended truck guys need as traction is a problem,,i hook up a tad better now,,(still spin though),and pull harder top end.,,,just my two cents,,if you dont believe or want to find out for yourself,,,,check past car mags for the performance tests.

Before I touched my factory exhaust I did some baseline testing. Then I took the entire factory cat back off and left it in the shop. The numbers were the same. Then I put on the Lightning muffler which is 2 in and 2 out so I got rid of the so called restrictive "y" The numbers were the same. After changing some things during last years season I started thinking maybe the exhaust was choking me so I got out the sawzall and cut the muffler loose guess what..the numbers didn't change. Same thing applies to my race car which has 3" full exhaust with flowmasters and mandrel bent pipes over the axle and out the back. People are always asking why don't I uncap it at the track so last season I crawled under there and unbolted the headers. Guess what? It ran the same on the motor and on the spray. I am not calling BS on anybody just saying that I have rarely seen any gain from muffler only changes. I truly wish I could get the gains that some people get from the simple stuff.
