Default Muffler decisions

I'm about to get rid of the flowmaster, Need some opinions on which you would choose? I'm between the Hooker Aerochamber and Bassani on the mufflers. I would really like to make a true dual system but was told that the LS engines are better off with just a single exhaust. Is this true? I will have to run a high flow cat(s) to pass the sniff. I'm also getting LT's. So if you had to choose, Which muffler would you go with?

The Aerochamber flows really good and sounds great, no need for a true dual system as it will make you loose hp. Get a SI/SO and be done.

Could you explain how the dual setup looses HP? Thanks

i dont think dual setup looses hp, it depends on the flow of the air from your intake till the exhaust tip... what ive done is installed headers then kept the stock cats + a custom made muffler which suits the diameters of the pipes and all hooker is good..

It's not that a true dual by itself will hurt performance, the problem is that most likely if you run a dual setup it will be done with a pipe too large in diameter, that will loose some hp.

Try a search and you'll find lots of info.

True duals are fine for big cube motors, but overboard on a 5.3. Go 3" back to a SI/DO Aerochamber and run 2.5 to the tips.

2.25" duals is a hair larger than a single 3" system if you compare cross-sectional area of the pipes. It's what's on my 4.8 and is running just fine. A lot of people, though, run 2.5" duals on their 4.8/5.3's and that is too big IMHO.

Okay so I'm not going to do the true dual setup. So you all say to run A 3" all the way? Will I lose alot of power if I run SI/DO muffler with 3" off the front and 2.5 tails ? If the single 3" is loud then I just wont run the dual pipe. I just wanted the dual pipe loudness.

Unless youre going to put a big cam in it or run a s/c the single 3" from the y-pipe back will be plenty and will be loud depending on the muffler you run. With LT's, hi flow cats and a single 3" exhaust you should get the sound youre going for. LPP makes a great set of long tubes for the 5.3L and comes with a pre fabbed 3" y pipe that would be easy for your local exhaust shop to work back from there. As far as mufflers go, the aerochamber mufflers sound good, only reason i didnt go with them on my SS is because they sounded too much like the flowmasters. I went with dual Magnaflows and couldnt be happier, very loud at WOT and a good tone at idle. Part #14419 is the 3" in/out of what i have. Theres a guy on Ebay that sells them at awesome prices too, best mufflers ive ever ran.
