Default Need to find out what these codes mean?

and also what they will cause the motor to do?
got a truck that is acting wierd and Im trying to help him out.
any thoughts?
these are the 2 codes that he is throwing.
P0442 Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (small leak)
P0455 Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (gross leak)
he says it stutters from a dead stop, and he complains of the dreaded weak shifts, which I have allready explained to him about the TM.
my question is are these codes, that are being thrown, having anything to do with the truck taking off?
or should he just take it into the dealership, and let them figure it out?
I would like to give him an answer, any feed back would be appreciated.
thanks,
Daniel

Has any work been done on the truck?

A freind of mine bought a used 03 truck and had this light on it. The delaership took care of it. They replaced something on it that had been known to fail, but not enough to warrant a recall or TSB I think. I'm not sure what it was they replaced, but I'm gonna take a shot in the dark and say it was the EVAP canister, the little thing in front of the gas tank that has all the lines coming in and out of it.

Anything from a bad gas cap not sealing off to a leak in the EVAP lines could cause the leak. I would call the dealership and ask the service department for some technical advice.

The times I've seen those code they were caused by a missing gas cap, gas cap not sealing or holding pressure, and a sticking EVAP canister purge valve/solenoid. Take a look at the gas cap and make sure it's tight and make sure the sealing o-ring isn't mangled. If all checks out well, hit up the dealer.

he also mentioned a tapping, or popping noise coming from between the cab and bed of the truck, could this be the solenoid valve?

The selenoid is on the manifold ... it could be the purge canister he's hearing????? I would check out the gas cap and maybe the purge canister. See how much they are .. it may not hurt to replace it anyways just to eliminate it from the problem. Whatever it was that fixed my buds truck ... it was cheap, like 20 bucks cheap.

It might be the exhaust rattling, but I don't think the exhaust would have anything to do with this unless they messed something up under the truck. You might crawl under there and put an eye on that canister and the lines just for kicks and giggles.

Did you ever find out what codes you were throwing?

throttle position sensor, or something like that, I will have to get it read again, and the imfamous low voltage fuel circuit, code. otherwise known as the crappy fuel guage doesnt work code !

I dont drive the truck much, anymore.
I have a Company vehicle now. so when I get a chance I will run it up and get the code scanned.
