Default Need help finding carb motor?

Ok I have a 93 SWB with a carbed 383 in it currently. However when i get off in it it smokes horribly. So i think one of my oil rings is shot. It also uses about a quart every hundred miles. if you were to be putting a new 383 or something with around 500hp back in it what motor and from who would you buy it? I know quite a bit about the LS motors but when it comes to carburation i am an idiot. Any help greatly appreciated.

If you are doing that and you want new, I would go two ways. Either the GM zz383 with 425hp and just change the cam in it. Or you could, get a new block, and get a stroker kit that fits you needs, add the cam you want, set of good flowing heads, and a Edelbrock Air-Gap intake manifold, and a 750 cfm carb.

It depends on what you're going for. I might be inclined to go with a LSX motor with Edelbrocks carb intake and timing (MSD) box. If you want to stay with a first gen small block, budget is the main thing. Speedomotive offers some pretty stout packages, from Rotating assem. all the way to turn key motors. If you **** runs as strong as it seems, I'd freshen it up with rings and bearing, a valve job, etc. and re-run it. This is a pretty vague question, which makes it hard to answer. Pump gas? Daily driver? Aluminum heads?

Check out Speedomotive, it's a good place to start. Personally, I'd stay away from the Shafiroff motors, as I know of two different people first hand who had problems with complete $15k motors they bought from them. Reher Morrison has been making good power for awhile, and they offer many more possibilities than what is listed on their website....but they can be pricey, as they use all first class components.

Well the motor runs on pump gas (93) it will run on 87 as its only at 10.1. The motor now is built for the bottle. Has a 236-242 duration cam in it with a set of hogged out Vortech heads. With a victor jr. intake. Not sure of the carb size. It so far has run a low 13 on motor and mid 11s on the hose. Just not sure how to go about everything. I'm thinkin bout just gettin freshened up but not sure of machine costs or anything like that. it already has forged bottom end. But I was trying to see if it would just be cheaper to buy a new shortblock or get this one freshened up? I know you can't give an estimate on fixing a motor without seeing the damage first but does anyone have an idea what it would cost to freshen it up? With honing the cylinders and doing the other basic necessities. it is my daily driver / strip truck.

It wouldnt cost much to freshen it up,if you do decide to rebuild get you some good rings. I got speed pro plasma moly rings in the motor in my 78,they were a bit pricey(100.00) but well worth it if i ever put the juice to it.When i rebuilt the motor in my 78 took it to the machine shop they bored the block, cleaned it,magnufluxed it,and did the grinding on my crank for 360.00

well I'm not gonna say money isn't an issue, but it isn't. I plan on setting atleast 2500 back for this lil project. Not sure if the motor's cylinder walls are hurt or not so not sure if i need to buy new pistons or not. But I will def be putting a good set of rings back in it. It has cut a best 60 on motor of 1.83 is that pretty good for a truck on motor?

yea well im glad to hear that should be enough. I know with the LS motors if you wanna do any kind of motor work correctly it costs an arm and leg. But the 1.83 was the pass i brok my chunk on. it left spinning caught traction then broke loose again. I hope the track will be a lil better next time out. I cut those times on M/T street radials. they are some sticky ***** for street tires
