Default Need Help on Gear Choice!

Well, I'm going to be getting posi (Eaton or Auburn) real soon, because my 1 tire is getting really abused. Anyway, I was figuring that while it's torn apart, I might change the gear ratio. I have factory 3.73's with 285/50/20 tires, and I was thinking of putting in some 4.10's. I think that 4.56's will be a bit much, but then again I'm not sure. I drive in town 98% of the time, so it rarely sees the interstate. Do you think I'll see any gains (1/4mi) by changing? Is it worth the money? Help me!

I would suggest 3.90's. They are right in between 4.10 and 3.73. Since you have 3.73 already, I'm not sure that I would even fork out the dough to do them in the first place. 4.10's will be pretty high geared.

Well I have the little 4.8, and you have to spin the **** out of it to make any power. It shifts at about 6500, and I feel in order to get it up there faster/better, I'm going to need a 4.XX gear ratio.

wow. i wouldn't consider anything over 4.10. but i do drive on the Istate. since you have the 73 gear, if you can and are willing, find a 5.3 crank and slap in it there along with the posi unit then see if you want more gear. the crank shouldn't be too hard to find as long as you are willing to swap it out. you will more or less have a 5.3 with the better pistons...

a lot of work i know but well worth it.

I know where you can find a crank.

PM me if you're interested and I'll pass the info alone.

I didn't realize that you had the hotcam in there. I would say the 4.10's would be OK in that case. I would still go with 3.90's if it were me. If I wouldn't have put the 80e trans in mine, I would have gone with 3.90s.

With 4.10's and the 4l60e where does that put you rpm wise at 75 mph ?

Dayum Ill,

I thought you were gonna get a handheld programmer and that was it. Anyway, I'm running Richmond 3.90 and I like it pretty damn good. I lost a little mileage, but not too much. I just need to get my trans built up a little and a torque converter so I can get off the line better. I got my more aggresive Nelson tune with firmer shifts and all, but I need to install it tonight. The bad thing about 3.90 gears is that I don't think all of the handhelds have settings for 3.90. I know the S&P Pro-Flash didn't.

4.10, but hey 4.56 would be fun since your mostly just hanging around town.
