Default Need New motor For 98 Vortec Truck

I have a 98 Chevy K2500 with a Vortec 350 and the motor is spent. I need a new one and I plow snow and tow. So the more torque the better. Truck has 4L80E and 3.73 gears. 32" tire. I have a vette to go fast. Should I buy a stock replacement motor for $2100 and change the cam and tune and maybe add a converter or what do you think. Looking for good torque. What longtube headers are available for this motor??? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a friend that put a HT383 in his truck and put down 221 RWHP on a 340 Crank horse motor. Just seems like a lot of money for that. Another friend bought a GM 383 (425 HP) Crate and put down 269 RWHP. In his 80 Camaro with 700R4 and 3.73's. Just don't feel for the money they are up to the Power they should be making.

I had a car at the shop with the 260HP/350TQ 350 crate engine and it put down a respectable 219HP and 330TQ to the wheels, a ZZ4 that put down 309HP and a fast burn 385 that did 340HP to tthe wheels. I did how ever have an HO 350 that only made 209, but that was my only lemon with GM crate engines. Since you have a 4l80 if you can swing the money get yourself the HT454, it is a pretty easy conversion and all the parts are off the shelf for a GM truck.

Hi is the HT454 Fuel injected and what would the extra parts needed be for the swap. Will the stock harness with a tune work or do I need to change harnesses and such?. Thanks for your help. Matt

If you have the Gen I TBI engine I would think you would just need a re-tune or chip depending on PCM, and the bigger throttle body with correct injectors/manifold and maybe motor mounts. Never done this particular swap but since the 454 was OEM equipment in some of the trucks it can't be that hard. If you want contact Turbo City (www.turbocity.com), I've used them a few times for TBI's, they are one of the best I know of and can point you in the right direction on what you will need.

the HO 350 is just a Vortec 350 with a flat tappet cam instead of teh Vortec roller cam.

You guys have to remember that GM rates tehse things in gross hp.

teh Vortec L31 350 is rated at 255 hp or about 320 gross hp.

A stock vortec 350 truck will dyno at 180-200 rwhp, so 209 rwhp from a 350HO really isnt that bad.

That ZZ4 and theFAstburn 385 are sure working well.

It all depends what you install around the engine as well. Like induction, trans, exhaust and intake.

teh HT383 is rated at 340 GROSS hp, which is only 20 gross hp more than a stock Vortec 350, so 221 rwhp from an HT383 isnt that bad either. The stock cross ram intake maifold and 19 pph injectors arent helping things at all. The stock Vortec 350's have tuiny 1 7/* headpipes with so serious kinks in them,. The 3/4 ton and GD trucks use a 2 1/8" dual headpipe setup.

YOU DONT WANT A 350 HO... DOESNT MAKE GOOD VAC. YOU WILL HAVE A CONSTANT SES LIGHT.... BECAUISE OF LOW VAC. I WOULD GO WITH THE 383... THATS WHAT I DID, I HAVE A 98 K1500, BEAUTIFUL IDLE.... AWESOME TORQUE, THEN WHEN I GOT TIRED OF IT I DROPPED A MAGGIE ON IT... STILL PASSES CALIFORNIA SMOG...
