Yes, I am serious. The tiny hole lets all the air escape as you fill it yet doesn't allow a significant amount of coolant through before the thermostat opens. I've been doing this for years and I never have to go through all that burping and refilling routine. To each his own.

I think you may have meant a 1/8th inch hole. You typed eight inch, which may have thrown him off.

He also said he removed the thermostat and still had this problem. that would allow air to escape and a free flowing system which should not have overheated. I'm not sure how it could be the water pump, if its a direct shaft. Seems more like a passage may be blocked like others have said. But that doesnt make sense if he flushed the motor and cooland flowed freely through.

Double check your belt routing...is it possible to put the belt on wrong? I know that the pump is designed to flow/turn one way. Also I have had a water pump on a Olds motor where the impeller was loose on the shaft...shaft turned, impeller didn't. I can't wait to hear what the problem is.

thanks for the help, I'll admit, I was wrong about the head gaskets, driver side was backwards

I tried the coat hanger, it worked on one side, but not on the other. New gasket and head bolts are on order.

Thanks again for all the suggestions

Reading from the beginning, I was hoping to see your response on this. When my motor was built, I had the EXACT same issue. I tried all the simple stuff, but it was a no-go. Finally decided early one Saturday morning to pull the driver-side head, and BAM... it was on backward.

Check the following link out, and you'll see the play-by-play:

Sorry I didn't see your thread earlier, but good to see ya got it figured out.

Howa yeah! . . . getting tuned tomorrow

surprisingly it'll idle, but if you're coming off the freeway, that's a different story.

Thanks again for the help!

Yep I went searching and found your thread. I saw the tag for the head gasket, and the direction that it was pointing, and that was a dead give away. That was before I pulled the water pump and tested it. As soon as the manifold cam off, it was confirmed.

Thanks again for the help.
