Default New Radix Numbers

Got my radix tuning issues resolved yesterday-stock boost.
All runs on Mustang Dynamometer.
I'll try to post up the charts next week.

Stock with boltons (in sig) HP 265 TQ 283
(Nelson Tune-mail order)

Nelson Radix Tune (mail order) HP 306 TQ 332

With the Nelson Tune my cats were stinking up a storm on the dyno so not knowing if they were burned out completely they were replace with hi-flow cats. At this time i also went with better plugs & wires.
After receiving the unlocked pcm from Nelson the Superchips program from Magnacharger was downloaded. On the first run it cut out at 4,000 rpm because they had the wrong gears programmed (3:42 instead of 3:73). After Sean changed that it made good power comparable with the final tune however it too was running very rich and heating up the cats.

After with Pepi Racing Tune HP 346 TQ 388
bottom line HP+ 81 TQ+ 105

I think F8L sums it up best in this thread:

Remember that not all mail-order tunes work right the first time.

Case in point one of my buddies dyno'd a guys STS equipt 4x4 5.3L and with a "particular" mail-order tune it only did 270-280rwhp baseline but after a complete custom tune on the Dynapac it did 385rwhp give or take.

Hell even seeing what comes of having 3 tuners in my area makes me skeptical of any tune. Just because it's "tuned" doesn't mean it's right. You can't really do steady state tuning through the mail and not very many shops have the capability nor the inclination to do so.

Anyways, i am now happy with the way my truck runs and also have peace of mind knowing it runs safe and efficient. In my opinion a dyno tune is worth the money because it eliminates many variables.

Thanks to Speed Engineering for their super customer service and Greg, Gary and Sean at PF&E for making it happen.

Good info. I'm really glad its all working now. Isn't that torque great?

Do you happen to know what amount of timing they have you running in the upper rpms?

Do you have any scanning software to watch your PCMs readings? With the issues you have had, it would be a good investment.

Good to hear you got it sorted out.

Tex is right about the need for tuning software... you will need it again I figure I'm up to over 170 tunes on my truck and I've only been going since January on it. Just did three more last night with the last mods and still have some part throttle tuning (MAF scaling) to do when I get the chance again.

Not by choice! Well.. not entirely by choice... LOL At any rate once this tune is finalized I'm done on the truck barring any major breakage that opens the opportunity to go big(ger)

And since I'm not a complete post *****...

Done on the truck..... Ha, I bet. I bet you upload another tune within a week.

To keep this thread on track - note that those dyno numbers were on a Mustang dyno. The typical dynojet numbers for the same truck would probably be quite a bit higher.

the 04' SS that i was working on when i found out about the injectors being too small i have somewhere between 80 and 100 flashes in that. the truck i'm currently working on/driving has a 408 in it and i've reflashed that around 50 or so times at this point. by the time i get it done where i'm completely happy with it i'll be around 80 or so. if i go and change the cam i'll end up over 100 for sure. even the most experienced tuner isn't going to get everything out of your truck on the first try. this is why mail order tunes many times are way off. it's not hard to be better than a stock tune, but to be better than a mail order tune isn't hard either if you do your own.

what pulley and how much boost are you running on this 5.3L?

Is this the intercooled Radix you're running?
