Default New thermostat-will a change in the thermo need a computer change?

I have a 06 Silverado with a 4.8 and was thinking of changing the thermostat to a cooler one. Which temp thermostat is best and will the computer like it?

Thanks,
Garson

No lower than a 180* t-stat. The 160* stats work well with S/C engines.
A 160* stat will actually decrease your mpg's.
The only advantage of a lower t-stat is obviously lower engine temps, but also gives lower tranny temps that will increase tranny life.
Either which t-stat you choose, there will be no increase in hp or TQ.
If that's what you were after, then I would save your $$$ for another mod worth gains.
If you change it anyways, you do not need to re-tune your PCM.

I agree that the lower stat may lead to a decrease in MPG as the PCM will run the engine richer as temps are lower, but retuning the PCM can optimize the advantage of the cooler stat. I ran a 180* stat when I had my clutch fan, and the engine ran just a few degrees cooler as the factory stat, but not as consistent. After hard driving it would heat up as much as the factory 195* stat did (around 200+), but would come down to anywhere from 185* to 192* afterwards, where the factory stat ran consistently around 195 to 197*.

I'm using a 160* stat now, but I have e-fans that are set to come on at 180* and off at 173*, and the PCM has been tuned for the cooler stat, allowing me to run more timing before detonation occurs, and have cooler tranny temps. The tranny temps have been definitely noticeable according to the tranny temp guage in the Denali cluster (for what that's worth). Since the PCM has been tuned for it, MPG doesn't seem to be a factor depending on how I drive.

You can install the 160* stat with the stock PCM, but as CHEVY6000VHO mentioned, the 160 stat alone will not net you any noticeable performance increase, probably just a drop in MPG, mainly during cooler weather.

You might look into this too.

Thats my T-Stat in the How To. It dropped my temps nicely.
