No muffler?

On a NA 5.3/6.0 motor taking the muffler off will knock off a lot of low end TQ. I know this because I did this to my 2000 silverado (5.3). I lost low end, but I felt like I gained some HP in the top end. But low end sucked, especially when I was spinning some 35" mud tires.
Just get a hi-flowing muffler like a Dynomax or Magnaflow. You can get a muffler for under $100, and it will sound good and not lose low end.

It's not just "loud", it's feloniously loud. It will be really cool for the first ten minutes and then you'll realize it's making your head hurt.
Years ago, before I could weld or had a welder, I had to drive to the exhuast shop with open headers. It was so loud I remember holding up traffic for driving so slowly. I've also driven with only stock catalytic converters with turndowns. That's a lot quieter but it resonates and pounds so loud and deap that it sets off car alarms everywhere. The firing order of the Gen-I SBC burbbles a lot more than the Gen-III engines do, so maybe your would be a bit less -but it's still loud as hell.
Here's a seldom-shared video of mine where I had just the cats on after the trans swap and my brother and I decided to torment a parking structure at less than 800 RPM. I kid you not - the alarms started going off just driving around the OUTSIDE.

Idle: Gen1 SBC and dumped cats only: http://bertok.us/pics/cats-only.mpg
Merging, Windows down: Gen-1 SBC and dumped Cats only: http://bertok.us/pics/4L80E-merge.mpg
Merging, Windows up: Gen-1 SBC and dumped Cats only: http://bertok.us/pics/4L80E-merge2.mpg
That's all I've got for sound clips. Like I said, fun for a short time, annoying in the long run.
