Odometer Reading
Hello All,
I own an 02 Silverado, and was wondering if anyone know where is the actual "Odometer Reading" stored? Is it in the gauge cluster or someplace else on the vehicle such as an ECU or other controller device.
Reason i ask is if i install a Denali cluster is it an absolute must to have it re calibrated to my current mileage. I know this would be more of a legal matter, but what if lets say i just swap them without re calibration and later on put the stock one back in. Is there a way to find out?
Any advice on this is a greatly appreciated. Tks in advance.

Rumor has it that only the cluster had the correct mileage stored in it. Not sure about your 02 model. GM may have made a change. It could be in the BCM as that has the vehicles VIN on it.
I think it is more of a moral / legal matter. I have a denali cluster and haven't had the mileage corrected. I run the stock cluster every so often just to keep the miles going up on a 12K per year rate.

Re: Odometer Reading
I knew someone that had a 99, and their odometer stopped working around 50k for some reason. They never got it fixed. They took it to the dealership to trade it in, and they told them that the odometer has not been working. The dealership found that their truck had 110k. I believe it was some thing to do with the tranny. Not sure though. They did not get in trouble because the odometer was defective. That is just what I heard a long time ago.

I've also heard that it's stored in the BCM but haven't been able to confirm this. If this is the case the cluster may be able to be set to the correct mileage with a Tech II.

Re: Odometer Reading
To my knowledge the mileage and engine hours are stored in the cluster on the '01's and '02's. I took my OE cluster into the speedo shop and they swapped the mileage/engine hours to my Escalade cluster. They told me they didn't need my truck to transfer the mileage just my original cluster. I asked them if the trucks computer stored the mileage (in addition to the cluster) and they told me they didn't know. Hope this helps.

BigTex, i have been wondering about the same thing. Thats what i planned on doing actually but dont want to run into any legal issue later down the road. I can simply swap in the denali cluster use that and keep track of my miles manually swap clusters once in a while and do my mainteance using my own records, but i wonder what would happen if i take it to the dealer if they will be able to tell how many miles is on it without the original cluster being there?

Well, I used mine as a "virtual extended warranty". I still had only 3 years, but I didn't have to worry about the 36K mile part. I just put the stocker back in before I go to the dealer, for inspection, oil change, etc... Dealer never questioned me on it.

Re: Odometer Reading
My step-bro (certefied gm tech) once told me that the truck hours that you see in the o.d, can be divided by somthing to give you a milage. I asked if you have to have the original cluster to git the original hours, and he said they can git that from the computer. So I think that someone would just have to really try hard to find out the original miles, he said that he's only done it a couple of times and that was to replace a motor. So I think your ok.

Just be careful if you trade your truck in or sell it private owner. You have to disclose that you don't have the correct mileage on the odometer. If not, and they find out you might be reported for odometer fraud. I have a buddy who is an Investigator for The Department of Motor Vehicles (CA) and he fines and sometimes arrests people for doing stuff like that all the time.
They make a sticker that you can put on the door jam of your trucks to tell people what your original mileage was before you did a cluster swap. I got one with my Escalade cluster but didn't need it since I had my mileage swapped from my old cluster to the new one.
