Haulin-*** for a ~5300lbs truck.

Go with that 421. It has more stroke which equals more torque; 4.125" stroke and a 4.030" bore. It will spin to 6000rpm with no problem too.

Ever thought about going to an intercooled Magnacharger ?

it apears to me the intercooled magna is a signifiacntly smaller blower than the whipple, i am sure it would feed a 6.0 but not a 421 and maybe not even a 408. right now spining the whipple to it's max rpm i can get 11-12psi on the 6.0, i can't run that but that is what it will put out.

put that on a 408 or a 421 and i am not sure how much boost it will be but i am still going to build a blower motor and hopefully someday someone will come out with a nice intercooled turbo set up

Hmm, I dunno I would assume that the Magna would be able to make more than 7psi on over 400 cubic inches. I think the compressor is the same that is on a Lightning therefore it would be able to go to 12psi or so.

Only problem I see running a Whipple at 12-14psi, is heat. The more you compress air, the hotter it gets. You would have to run damn near no timing to get not to knock.

Obviously, more displacement has the ability to pull more air.

I was you, I would get as much cubic inches as I could from a 6.0, get the heads worked over some, mild cam, and get the boost back up to about 6psi to run on 93 pump gas.

That's what I think...

Ok Parish, here is my 2 cents on a bigger motor. In my case some of the procrastination of doing some of my mods is the truck itself. I would love to go nuts with a huge motor, but here are questions that I have yet to answer.
1. My truck wieghs 4800# as it sits. To get where I want to be, I need to be 4000#'s or less. I want a truck that I don't have to take down on a diet to run my best times.
2. I want more power to, but how much will I be missing by not doing this with a reg cab 2wd.

I like where you are going, but just think, if you and Mix were doing this with reg cab 2wd's, both of you would be seeing mid to low 11's and possibly 10's at the rate we are progressing. I just really don't want to do this with my "second family vehicle" I really want to sell the beater truck (Dodge) and bring my Chevy back to stock and find a 99+RC/SB broken down and cheap and go nuts. That's my 2 cents and dreams at this time. But then again, there has to be a place in the hall of fame for a 4x4 ext cab hitting 11's. Nobody can deny that. I'm impressed with what you have done and won't take anything away from your acomplishments, but I sure would like to get a 440+ ci in a reg cab, but honestly, $$$ is the factor in todays economy. Yep, damn scratch off was only worth 2 bucks tonight.

you could never run 12psi on a whipple but that is how much boost it could pump at max rpm on a stock 6.0. i am using that number to help figure what it might pump on a 408 or 421. i droped about 3psi going from the 5.3 to a 6.0, now a 6.0 to a ~7.0 with heads would probably drop a bunch more but if i figure i could go 12 now and all i really want is 6-8 with the 7.0 i think i will be ok.

the whipple is a 2.3L unit and it seems like the magna was a 1.9(guess), to take advantage of the intercooler you would want to push 8+psi, i dont see a 1.9L blower doing that especialy if that is all i can get out of my 2.3L blower unless it is rated at a much higher rpm. even the ford guys swap out the blowers when they start pushing big HP and that is on a 5.4. i have never had anyone really confirm that the magna is too small but it sure looks like it to me.

9-1 iron 421 with heads and a mild cam at 7psi with a 150+ nitrous set up <<super sleeper

I agree w/ Greg, but I also understand Jim's perspective. I have been torn with the same decision. As it stands, I am going to install a modified LQ9 (hopefuly soon) into my 99 excab Z71. This will make the old truck a much better daily driver, but wouldn't that motor be better in a single cab? On the other hand, it sure is nice to have all that power and performance in a daily driven, non-stripped vehicle.

I think Parish8 should get a 11 second slip in the Z71, then start putting the big money into a single cab truck, or even build that workshop he was talking about.

Makes me wonder what I'll run with my 6.2L (383) with 10psi of boost??? Was thinking low 13's maybe high 12's but maybe lower?

Questions?

What rear end/gears you running?
6.0L stock internaly?
Race Weight?
Also you got to be running a mod 4L60E?
Slick size?

Did notice some puffs of black smoke even on the non-nos run as well?

Ken

Dam messed up that post..., Hey parish8 Ive been following the build up of your truck with interest.. Ive been going a similar route with my 02 Avalanche.., Im at 5600 lbs with the 5.3.., Whipple with 43lb injectors, at 10lbs boost, Water/Alky injection, 50 shot Nitrous, Yank 3000 converter, Built tranny (Raptor parts), 4.11 gears with Eaton posi.. My best with this combo without the 50 shot has been mid 13s., I haven't run at the track yet with the 50 shot.., but Ive been working on something that might interest You.., as You know there's no Intercooler for the Whipple yet..., but ive been working with Design Engineering Inc. on setting up there Cryo Air Charge cooler on my whipple.... It uses Cryogenic freezing to cool the air charge.. Ive mounted the Cooling Bulb in the whipples inlet bell.., they say I should achieve a 40 to 45 degree Temp drop on the air charge with this set up.. Its basically just like a Nitrous set up.., has a 5 lb bottle that lasts for 5 minutes... Im activating it off of a boost pressure switch to come on at 3 p.s.i of boost.. Im also using there Fuel cooler bar.., Cryo chills the fuel as it passes through it....

Ive almost finished up the install.., and will be going to the Dyno soon to tune it..., and see what it does.., ill post the results when im done.. Its not very expensive $365 dollors for the basic kit.., I had to do a bit of fabbing to adapt it to the Whipple.., but if it shows good results ill let you know.... By the way...., Nice numbers with your truck.....

Butch.
