I've been trying to do some research on this. I want to purchase a set, but am having a dilema on if i can use cats. I live in NY and need to have cats. My question is, does it look possible to squeeze them in, by making a custom y-pipe. Meaning i would put the cats, right after the headers and then run 2.5 tubing into an x-pipe, then into the mufflers. It will be true dual. Basically my concern is, will i be able to fit the cats right next to the tranny. Looking at some of the pics, it looks awfully close. Let me what ya'll think. Thanks, and i'd appreciate any help i can get. By the way its a scsb, with a 5.3.

I dont see why you couldnt. Any competent exhaust shop should be able to fab in some cats on a y-pipe for the headers.

Did you have to take off the rocker covers to install the headers? I am going to be installing mine soon, and would rather not do this if at all possible.

No you dont have to remove the valve covers to install headers. I believe he was doing something else at the same time.

As forthe original thread question, no reason a good exhaust shop couldn't do that for ya as there is plenty of room. Here is pic of mine Y without cats:

you might want to go with after market cat they are made a little diff. and because it make a diff.were it is on the exhuast system so they do go bad because I put mine on the mufflers in the back by rear axle and was part of the reason I am on my third motor.I change mine about every 6 months.

thanks for the replys guys. keepem coming, i'd like a few more ideas. by the way z284thgen, could you possibly measure the distance from the header collector to the crossmember. If not, don't worry about it. Seems like the width of distance from the tranny to the chassis will be ok. But not sure if the cats will be too long or not. If not i could modify the crossmember. I'm thinking i will prolly go with magnaflow cats, which are 13" in length. thanks again.

It is 3" to a Flowmaster y-collector, 3.5" out to a 3.5" cutout. After the cutout it necks back down to 3" to a 5x8x18 Magnaflow dumped out the back corner. Entire system has mandral bends. More pics HERE(P01010010sm-P01010020sm).
