Default Popping noise coming from engine block

Well I am getting kinda worried. I've installed a 220/220 cam with springs, and there are times when I push the throttle over 30% I get hesitation and then a popping noise coming from the engine...

with my 212/218 cam it would happen but maybe once every 2weeks... now this is happening to me on a daily basis..

any ideas??

Could be a number of things.............

Broken valve spring, bent pushrod, detonation, engine vibration from worn motor mounts, etc etc

Here's what i got from some research:

Engine hesitates, and a popping is heard from the engine:
When you step on the gas, the engine seems to bog down or takes a second to respond. You may notice a general lack of power. You may notice the problem when the engine is hot or cold or when you are low on fuel. The popping noise really tells you something is not right.

Possible causes:
1. You may have a dirty air filter: Replace the air filter.

2. The ignition wires may be bad: Replace ignition wires.

3. There may be some other type of ignition problem: Check distributor cap or rotor. Ignition module may be bad.

4. The engine may have mechanical problems: Check compression to determine engine condition

There have been bad batches of 918 springs sold. I would certainly pull the valve covers and make sure one of them hasn't broken. You have said it was a condition of before and after so you would have had the covers off for the swap.... and didn't see a bad spring.

Is it detonation? A popping sound in the intake track? If detonation it can be a lean condition, fuel pressure drop. Excess timing. Maybe try some octane boost, or 93 octane fuel. Under load electrical problems. Plug wires, plugs failing. Check the plugs for insulator cracks, plug wires seated well, broken frayed etc. If it isn't throwing codes and popping through the intake I would lean more on mechanical. A valve not seating properly, broken spring, pushrod bent, rocker arm loose. etc. Even back to the cam install. Is it timed correctly. Dot to dot. Doubtful as it would have reared its head immediately I think.

I explained to the mechanic the problem and he told me it was to do with not getting enough air...the above said it might be due to a dirty filter so i just installed an AFE full intake kit and the sounds seem to have gone for today.. will look how it is tmrw

Could the timing chain be off by a tooth? I've always wondered what kind of problems you'd have if that happend.

If it got worse with the new cam I would have to lean towards it being more of a valvetrain issue. Like stated before I would check the springs, rods, rockers, and valves.

DUDE pull the valve covers and look for broken springs with shifted retainers now before you drop a valve and blow a piston like I did. It will only take like 30 minutes of your time to check. Go to dual springs if you have a broken one. The 918's are garbage. I even have the same small cam as you and broke 2 of them.

ill take her down the garage today and see if anythings in pieces... LS6 springs be a good combination? If I were to change out my springs, I want something to decrease the valvetrain noise....
