PosiTrac?
Baought a truck 6 months ago- have modified almost everything but haven't touched the rear end.
Got onto a hill yesterday (in the grass) and the wheels started spinning...BOTH OF THEM! I didn't get stuck...but did not expect both wheels to spin.
I knew my truck launched better than most-but did not know why. Looks like I have some kind of positive traction unit.
Is there any way of telling what kind without opening er up?

Re: PosiTrac?
My truck did not come stock with PosiTrac...it's a C1500 Sierra.
Mods...ummm...lets start from the top...
14in open element air cleaner
Ported-out (by me) throttle body w/injector tower spacer (me again) and adjustable fuel pressure regulator (still me)
Inch and a half throttle body spacer (had to raise the throttle linkage for this)
Edelbrock TBI Performar manifold
MSD Blaster Coil and 8mm dual core plug wires (plugs gapped at 60!)
Stock Heads (they're next to go)
FlowTech Shorty headers (emissions legal) & Bosch O2 sensor
FlowTech Terminator muffler (turned-down pre-axle)
rubber: 60's all around and American Racing wheels to match the paint (the paint is not THAT hot but the colors match)
Some kinda performance shocks came on the truck too-I hit curves like a sports car (and it's not even lowered)
I have a shift kit that is waiting for me to have the time to install it
Stock heads (THEY'RE NEXT)
I have also painted my headers to match my valve covers and plug wires (blue) with 1200 degree ceramic paint
It's a fun truck!

Re: PosiTrac?
sounds like you have a great start on your truck prepare, keep the mods comin. for me the easiest way to tell if you have a posi is to do a burnout. my silverado leaves a one wheel wonder but the camaro does a two tire smoke out. what did you do to your headers to paint them? any prep at all or just paint and go? welcome to the board.

Re: PosiTrac?
Definitely got the two-wheel burn goin!
On the headers, I put oven cleaner on them and baked them for 15 minutes...after cooling the paint just wiped off, hit it with a sanding scrub pad (you know one of those green ones) and then with mild grit sandpaper- don't remember exactly... Then I painted them with 1200 degree paint I bought at O'Reillys (contains ceramic)
It dries with a flat finish and is oil resistant like engine enamel. If I had it to do over, I would put 2 or three coats on insted of just one- I was in a hurry!

Re: PosiTrac?
hmmmmmm.....what year is your truck again? sorry to burst your bubble, but, it is not unusual for a one-legged rear end to spin both tires on GRASS! BUT, there is always a CHANCE it was ordered with a posi.

Re: PosiTrac?
I didn't say it CAME with PosiTrac. I have looked at the codes in the glove box...it didn't. But whoever the first owner was (I am the third) put one in. All I was asking was if there was any way to tell which one I had without opening the differential. Evidently there's not.
To answer your question...my truck is a 93. Were there other, non-GM Positive traction or limited slip differentials available for these trucks before 97?
And...to answer your if there was any doubt, my wheels can spin JUST FINE on concrete and asphalt. I have even gotten them to catch in second...and my shift kit is not installed yet!
