There blower and bottle guys on s10 forum are starting to all up the boost, running into issues with valve float with the stock springs. It seems at higher boost levels, the springs dont like much over 4400 or so, depending on application.

What did the guys at Comp say you should run for locks and retainers?

These are the locks Im running. Comp Cams 648-12, 7 Degree, 1 groove
And the retainers. GM Part 10166344. Their stock LS retainers

up to 15psi on e85, stock cam and springs still. 400rwhp and a 12.8 on 13psi. the owner wants to turn it up a little more so this round we are doing valve springs and a bap on the aux inline pump. then maybe 20psi

Both the 915 & 918 springs are currently listed as having a: .885 I.D. / 1.290 O.D.; however with the older 918’s they did have a smaller I.D. This would just need verified upon assembly. The typical LS6 springs are comparable to the 915’s when it comes to dimensions.

I see your still running a stock cam, but if the owner decides to upgrade camshafts, just be careful when installing cams with more than .350 lobe lift (.525” valve lift) when using the factory dog bone lifter retainers. When using cams with more lift than this, the lifter can actually run out of room and hit the dog bone. I would say if you intend on running a cam with more lobe lift than this, it would be best to veer away from the stock style lifters and dog bone retainers and go with a tie-bar type arrangement.

Comp Cams Valve Spring Retainers (steel)
Part #///Description///Angle///Stem Size///Spring Diameter Dia. 1///Dia. 2///Dia. 3///Dia. 4
For stock LS applications:
774-16///GM Gen III w/ #26915 or #26918 Beehive//7°///Stock 8mm///1.055”///1.030”///.640”///— —
For applications behive springs and 11/32" valve-stems:
787-16///#26915 or #26918 in Non Gen III Engine///7°///11/32”///1.055”///1.030”///.640”///— —

While it doesn’t apply to you, most small-block heads since the late '70s have an exhaust valve with a 3/8-inch-diameter valve stem, especially truck engines. Prior to this, the intake and exhaust valve stems both measured 11/32 inches. The Vortec heads have returned to 11/32-inch-diameter valve stems. I just didn’t want people reading this assuming that all SBC’s and such automatically had 11/32-inch valve-stems and purchasing products based on this info without further researching the parts they need.

Picture of the large Vortec style valve-guides. You can easily see how they would locate the springs and where interference would be if there is any.
