question about rear-end noise??
ok since i got my 4.10s and posi installed there has been a humming noise coming from the rear. i cant figure out what the hell it is, does a posi make any noise? when i let off the gas it seems to slowly fade away, but for the most part its always making that whining noise. anyone ever experiance this?

Re: question about rear-end noise??
Mine does it, but only between 40-45 mph and only when maintaining that speed. If I push the gas to accelerate or let off the gas to slow down it stops. I bet the B$#@ard that installed it did not set it up to manufacturers specs. It is really annoying, like a droning exhaust. Does your do it at all speeds? And when accelerating? Did you install it yourself? If not, you should take it back to whoever did it and tell them to fix it. One quote I read on here that I will not forget was "Gears don't whine, improper installation does" or something like that.

Mine does it to, its not anything bad, it just means that the person didn't "mike" it right...MOST aftermarket gears will whine or hum though( from what ive heard)

Re: question about rear-end noise??
Hey I just got thru changing the differential oil since it has been 1000 miles and I checked out the ring and pinion and it looks fine. Of course I don't have micrometers to measure but it looks to be centered and nothing is damaged yet, so I am not going to worry about it. Be sure to take the cover off and clean the magnet. There were a few shavings from the break in. Oh yeah, my dumb *** pried the magnet off with a screwdriver, but it turns out it was glued on, so I had to superglue it back on, or else it barely stays on the cover Also I filled it all the way up to the fill hole, I hope this is right, since the factory differential called for several mm below the hole. I also reused the gasket, even though I have a new one, because it looked perfect and only had 1000 miles on it. It will probably work fine. So your gears only whine at 40-45 mph or at all speeds????

Re: question about rear-end noise??
well to tell u the truth i havnt really noticed any other time than when im going about 40 or so, but ill check tommorow. i got it installed by a mechanic, he test drove it for a few minutes too after he put them in. i'm guessing he did it right. the place was well known for working with trannys etc. but who knows, bbowtie said its normal
it doesnt really bother me much since i have music, plus im getting a whipple so i better not get annoyed by "whining sounds" anyway, i just dont want it to be a major problem, like grinding gears or anything, thats y i posted

Re: question about rear-end noise??
I am by no means an expert on this, but I have personally set a few diff gears, all on dana axles. NONE of the gears I have set, ratios ranging from 4.10 to 4.88, whine or have any noises from the diff. I did get some noises/vibrations from spinning the driveshaft faster though.
If I were really concerned about it, I would put the rear of truck on stands, disconnect the drive shaft, pull the cover and check the contact pattern of the teeth. You can pick up some gear marker compound at auto stores and apply it to several of the teeth. Then rotate the ring and pinion by yoke (where the drive shaft bolts up).
Get a book or pamplet from an auto parts store that shows proper and improper contact patterns. If, after you spin the gears forward and backward a couple of rotations, you notice what shows in the book as a bad pattern, you will likely need some work done.
Again, I'm no expert, so you might want to ask professional that you can trust about this for second opinion.
