Different engine would be easier. If you get a 6.0 and you feel like stroking that before you toss it in, then by all means, go for it. But a 4.8 doesn't stroke to 383 (not cheaply, anyway; it would be a custom deal) and there isn't really any financial benefit in stroking the 4.8 anyway, as the cost to completely rebuild your engine with a new rotating assembly would be above the cost of a 6.0 swap. I recommend an LQ swap if you are considering a swap; easiest 6.0s to find and the extra power will be noticeable immediately.

Oh yeah and the only LSx 427 block ever to roll out in a production Chevrolet is the LS7; you aren't going to be tossing one of those in your truck from the local junkyard ($$$)

You can stroke a 4.8 to 383 IIRC with nothing more than a .030 over hone on the cylinder walls.

Really? I know LS1s stroke to 382 and 383 with a slight overbore, but I didn't know that was pretty much the same for the 4.8. The point remains, however, that it would be more cost-effective to swap bottom ends for a 6.0 (or LS1 or whatever he wants) than it would be to overbore and stroke his 4.8.

yuppers!!

And Double yuppers on the LS7 bit too. I assume he meant 327ci but if he did mean 427...I wouldn't touch that motor and just drop it in and be done, assuming all the dry sump stuff wouldn't be too much of a headache.

Shouldn't be. Lots of wet-sump LS7s running around. I would love to throw an LS7 block between my heads and oil pan

im sorry i mean 327, and the mechanic who has been doing work for my truck says he can stroke it out to a 383 for the friendly price of 4,000 haha

well if the 427 was cheaper but then everybody would have one. Well like i said im having a baby, and before i found this out i was going to see what the little 4.8 could then give it to my brother for his 86 better gas mileage and have him help me get a 427 we were gonna do it but plans have changed...

I was gonna suggest if you lived close enough there are probably quite a few members who could help you pull your motor and drop in a 6L in as little as 20 hours for a few bucks but there aren't that many members in New Mexico that I know of that you could ask. There's a few in Pheonix and again some in Texas but not any that I know of in N.M. that could do a swap in a weekend.

You can do so much more with $4,000 than a 383. With $4K you could build a full bolt on screamer of a 6L, with a converter, including the $500-600 install price.
