I just noticed that my rear differential is leaking between the cover and the carrier so Im assuming its a gasket for the cover that needs replacing. I just had my yukon posi installed a year ago, so is fixing this going to be as easy as just removing the cover and putting a new gasket on and bolting the cover back on? Do I need a gasket sealer of some sort and torque specs for bolts and what kind of differential fluid is recomended for my carrier and how much do i put in? I dont do much of the work on my truck myself except for changing plugs and oil etc.

Yeah, its really simple.

Remove the cover and clean off the old RTV or gasket material really good, and then get a new gasket or make a good, solid, continuous bead of RTV all the way around the cover starting at the top and finishing at the top (without stopping if possible).

If you use RTV, let it set for a little while before you put the fluid in.

Then open the fill plug on the side of the differential and then fill it up till it starts to run out and then put the plug back in and you are done.

I believe the fluid is 75W90 synthetic. 2-3 qts should fill it up.

Get the RTV in the black tube "high oil resistance" I wouldn't use a gasket at all just run a nice uniform bead around the case and circle around each bolt hole. Mine does not leak at all!
Like stated above, let it set for like 15 minutes prior to filling.

Here's what I would do. Remove the old gasket,use some brake cleaner in the can to clean it really well and the housing as well, USE some 3M black weather strip adhesive and make a bead around the housing and put the gasket on let set for 5-10 mins. then put a nice bead on the gasket and then install the cover.
I use the black 3M on all my gaskets motor,trans pan, etc. and I will quarantee if installed correctly they will not leak. I have had oil pan bolts loosen on me and the pan will stay stuck and not leak and I have bent a valve cover getting it off because it was stuck to the head.

Just remember to clean both surfaces really really good with brake cleaner!!!!

I just went ahead and went with the black RTV, cleaned everything up real nice on both surfaces (PITA) before I applied the RTV to the case. I bolted everything up and waited about an hour and retorqued the bolts and added about 2.5 quarts of sythetic gear oil. So far everything looks good and no leaks Thanks alot everyone for your help. Now to put that inline fuel pump on
