But we are also the same bunch that will shorten an egr tube, bypass a throttle body, do a Free Ram air, all for dubious gains but you guys get sqeamish when it comes to how thing look? This is one mod that is easily reversed. If your trying to go faster, why drive around with a bicycle helmet on your intake?
Oxidizr, thanks for the informative response.

A bicycle helmet???
Let's see...if I remove that plastic piece (.5lbs?), I will see no change in ET. So why bother? You're also concerned about heat? My intake is never hot to the touch so why bother removing it? If you want to reduce weight up front, then just take off your front bumper....and your hood, fenders, headlights, grill, fuse block cover, pcm cover....

Could the cover be there to insulate the intake from under hood temps? Being how hot flows to cold; under hood temps reacing triple digits, the insulater could have like a beer cooler effect!

Fine, I am taking it off and I am going to call it the ugly intake mod, and I can guarantee I will feel a SOTP but I will probably have detotnation problems too. But I know its good for at least 10 hp until the computer relearns and then I will lose 15hp.

T/A 30th raises an interesting point. I would still like to know why they insulated the cover.

Yes, if anything, you would want more foam. Only around the intake that is. It is insulation from heat because your intake will not generate its own heat. An intake gets warm because of heat soak from the heads.

I may do a little experiement with an infra-red thermometer. Maybe drive a few miles with the cover on and take the temp in a few locations and the repeat with the cover off.
If the cover is for sound supression there might be an audible difference with it on and off also.
