Default Rebuilding a 5.3......do most use a kit?

Hey guys, I did an oil change this evening only to find a bunch of metal shavings. I have just over 136K and am ready to rebuild it. I want to do all the bearings and seals and will probly have the short block set up by a machine shop but I was wondering what you guys have done during your rebuilds? (BTW it will be getting a mild cam and some warmed over heads)
thanks,

Clint

I think most of the members just go to a 6.0L at this point, it's roughly the same cost.

well, I'd like to but at this point a stockish 4l60e will stay in the truck until I have more money. i'm actually not looking to make huge power. At the moment I have a set of 706 heads that will but rebuild and milled down a bit and I plan to use an Ls6 cam. Just want to hit mid to high 13's without making my truck completely worthless on gas and costing me a pile....

5.3 to a 5.7
all you need is pistons/rings/cam/heads(which you have) and call it a day.

get ahold of Richard, or Rex they will tell you all you need!

I honestly don't think I can reliably do the 5.3-5.7 as my trans has failed me 5 times with a bolton only 5.3. Also I am not around anyone who knows how to tune trucks....which sucks.

if thats the case then why bother asking, throw a stock kit in it and have at it if your so worried about the trans.

Why not spend some cash and do a transgo HD-2 shift kit, and some servo's to help out the transmission some?

My thoughts exactly. You want 13"s but don't want to add more power cuz of your transmission.
Step 1. Beef up the Transmission.
Step 2. 6.0 or bore to 5.7
Should get you right in there.
