Default Rebuilding calipers! ...and other assorted brake q's.

Okay, I'm about 90% sure I'm going to scoop up some used 'Burban/Hoe calipers are they are like $40/ea! Well that being said... how hard is it to rebuild these?

Where can I get da rebuild kit from...GM? Local O'Reilly?

Should I rebuild my fronts also?

disc brake calipers are sooo easy to rebuild.

you just need O-rings!

I'm scared of brakes...almost died twice before is all! How do I get them apart? Do I need pistons or just o-rings?

Pretend I'm a n00b at the brakes.

you need an air compressor, remove the bleed screw, insert blow nozzle, have a piece of wood between pistons, BLAST!! away, if pistons do not pop out, wrap the tip of some pliers with tape and as you blow air in the bleeder hole, grasp the piston with pliers and pull, being careful not to gouge the outer wall of the piston as thats the sealing surface.

once pistons are out, look insude the caliper, pull out old O-rings, then inspect surface for any gouges, nicks etc. Should be in good shape though, especially if coming off of a sealed system. Then inspect the pistons for the same. If these are damaged, replace, they really shouldn't be though.

Next, clean, clean, clean, clean everything, inside and out. Use air nozzle again to dry/dis-lodge any debris. Take the new seals you bought from GM or Autozone/Napa/Pepboys and insert into caliper after you coat them with new brake fluid. You want them lubricated for when you reinsert the pistons. Srew the bleeder screw back in, DONE!

Sounds easy enough. I don't have my air tools in Dallas...they are in Houston. Could I still get them apart w/o air compression?

Do seals go on the piston also of just inside the caliper?

O-rings fit inside of caliper in a groove.

Yes, a pair of pliers will work with no air, just be carefull and tape the tips.

or the tip of a pen, butter knike, micro screwdriver, you get the idea.

1 caliper should be in the 5-10 bucks range, I actually have no idea on current pricing, but 10 yrs ago they where 3 bucks
