To make a long story short, my buddy that's a mechanic, rode in the back of my truck to see where the whining was coming from. He said it didn't sound like it was coming from the rear end, but right were the bed meets the cab of the truck. It had been raining off and on while we were trying to figure it out. I told him I had thought it was maybe the bearing in the middle of the driveshaft making the noise. I sprayed WD-40 on it and after puting a couple of miles on it, the next day it was almost gone. It still had a faint whine to it, something I could live with, but I wanted to get it replaced just in case something was wrong with it.
Today I bought the bearing ($86) and had it installed ($80) and the whine is worse now than it ever was before. The guy that installed it for me didn't think it was the support bearing, but I didn't listen. Now I'm $160+ out of pocket and the whine is worse.

Does this bearing maybe need some time to break in and then quiet down? Would spraying some WD-40 on it make it better?

 

no it should be quiet from the word go. remember that a solid noise such as a differential will travel through whatever it is connected to. like flyer said. does it do it louder when you are decelerating? is it louder at cruise than wot. is there a point where it is louder than others. is a high pitch whine or a deep tone???? is it in the middle or to one side.

 

You need a new buddy and mechanic. If it is not quiet on day one, it will only get worse. He never set it up correctly and he has it even worse now.

 

Richard- Did Brad do it for you? If not you might just have to drop it off to him and let him find it. That sucks man! You havent had any problems witht hat truck untill now huh?

 

Is it possible the WD40 worked as a placebo? A worn inner pinion brearing race will make a ringing noise at speeds under 50MPH is when you hear it most,cheap part to replace just labor intensive.

 

I thought WD40 was a no-no with anything related to suspension/drivetrain...I could be wrong though. I've always used white lithium grease for suspension joints.

 

Black moly based grease is the best for suspension joints and bushings.

 

I've gotta drop it off AGAIN in the morning. This **** is getting old. I haven't had one single problem with my truck until now.

 

That what I was told what it was in the beginning. The noise is so unbearable now, I can't drive it anymore until it's fixed. Now it sounds like a ******* table saw under my truck along with the ringing noise.

 

Just wondering...how many miles on it? Hope you get it fixed soon.
