Question Replacement for the 8.1L?

It was mentioned in another thread that the 8.1L was going to be phased out. Is this correct? If so, what are GM's plans for a big block replacement? Will it be LS1 based? For that matter is the 8.1L LS1 based like the other truck engines?

Are you sayin its goin to b say a 7l+ ls1 based motor?. I heard that the BB was dead because every one that wants to tow heavy buys a diesel. The BB sucks down more fuel and doesn't tow as well. I heard they were going to offer and newer dmax, a big small block v8 and about a 7l v10. But if you heard they were goin to keep the big block please do tell. I was afriad i was goin to have to rush and buy a truck before the next models come out so i can get the good ole BB v8

havent heard anything, we build mostly diesels at our plant, about 1 out of every 3-4 trucks somedays, but that doesnt mean they arent build at the other 4 plants... all in preference really, some dont like hunting for diesel fuel seeing how not every gas station carries it...

if i recall correctly, it is going to be a 10 cylinder engine. it's getting difficult to get any decent milage/emissions out of something with a 4.250 bore. that's why it's pretty much the last big block around.

Yes, it will probably be a 10 cylinder with cylinder shutdown technology.

that really sucks that gm would think about going to a 10 cylinder motor, dodge and ford both did it and both were/are useless gas hogs. the ford v-10 is JUNK, when i was working at home depot, the little rental truck had a v-10 and it was GUTLESS...gimme a big block or a diesel any day and i'm good if i have to tow anything.

well every one here loves their ls1 think of a 6.0L plus two cylinders 7.5L if you scale the numbers from the 6.0L 315 hp /380lbft you get 393hp and 475lbft torque. Combinrd w the new tranny's its apretty powerful combo. the 10cylinder makes sense, the BBC is a dinosuar and its not common with any other powertrain architecture.

After putting 58,000 miles on a HD with a 8.1 I can say I will never buy another one.The engine burned 103 quarts of oil and 4 gallons of coolant in the time I had it and was a dog for it's size.My Dmax would absolutely kill it in a drag race and gets about 60% better mileage.I read a HUGE article in GMHTP stating that GM is NOT building a v-10.Unless something has changed in the last 6 months GM will not be building a v-10.I don't know what the plans are for the 8.1 but it will not be replaced by a v-10.IMO a 425-440 ci LS1 based engine would work great.I would easily outpower a 8.1 and have better performance and fuel economy.
