I'd try to find the previous owner the wrecking yard should know who they bought the truck from and a phone call might answer a lot of questions. The insurance company would probably know the approximate milage.

I'd pull the heads regardless. I'd toss in some head studs and new head gaskets. Flip it and toss in some ARP rod bolts.
Clean it up like Whitt said and I'd cam it also.
Where in Texas are ya? I can help ya if you need some....

He's about 40 minutes NW of me.
I like the ideas here .. cam it, pull the pan and put some rob bolts in it. That would give you a good chance to look and see how much slack the timing chain has in it and how worn the bearing/rod journals are.

Hrm... well I'm sure someone would damn near give you a 4.8 or 5.3 for free...well like $300-500 I'd assume. I'd run that for a while until you could do a 6.0 with better bits. No sense in doing something halfassed you will regret later on.

I know that you have a limited budget, but do things right the first time trying to save money by cutting corners will only cost you more money and down time.I speak from experience.

Ah so he's by "The Armpit" too? I suppose that's up between Dallas and Texarkana on 30? It takes me about 3hrs to get to Texarkana from herre on my way to Hot Springs.
If ya need some help... just ask I could make a trip there.
