Default sbc noise, flexplate? wrist pin?

A buddy's Monte with a new to him engine. The engine came from another close friend who had it in a drag car, and never heard the noise.
The ticking noise is what we're concerned about.
355 SBC, Hydraulic roller camshaft, alum heads and roller rockers.
The noise (with a mechanics stethoscope) is loudest directly under the carb, or on the trans bell housing. On the bell housing it sounds like you're hitting it with a hammer. There is no noise on either valve cover or head at any place.
The only places you can hear it are on the intake, the rear-ish of the block near the oil pan rail, and the bell housing.
We've checked and re-checked valve lash, pulled lifters and checked them. Everything there seems good.

Could be a bent rod.

Pull the bolts from the flex plate to the converter, then run it. See if it still makes it.

To update this, the noise turned out to be a bad valve. It was pulling a dish in the head of it, and was so tall the valvespring was letting it bounce on the seat.
