SDPC 5.3 Build
#101
i got a newbie question, if i decided to go with heads and cam in my truck, will i have to have my pcm or anything else programmed? and if so will i have to take somewhere and put on dyno and tuned? i been looking into building my 5.3 in my truck, and don't know where to get started internally don't mean to mess up your thread but its got me really interested, thanks
The more mods you do to the engine I recommend a dyno or autocal and not a mail order.

so with the autocal from black bear performace, it comes with a tune already and install it on my truck with the cams and head and so forth, and then run it and email the program to the tuner and they will send me one im needing for my truck?

After thinking about this...we do have a "track". The local 1/4 mile track that was shut down years ago opened back up for "1/8th mile street drags". No timing system, no tree, no slips. Heads up, arm drop stuff.
I have run the truck there a few times and figured I would post "results"
1.5 Trucks on an E-Cab bolt-on 4.8
1 Truck on Silvy SS AWD (6.0L) With ?Gibson? Catback
18,000 lengths on 84 Civic....He wanted to run me, I don't know why
The truck needs gear and a converter to be a ET queen. It leaves very soft, but once power comes in, it does not stop pulling. 1/4 mile runs would be fun, but we have nowhere here to legally do that.
That said...ran a stock 4.6L Mustang GT in Mexico, on a very realistic version of desktop dyno....from 30-100, and he was at my bedside and fading. Oddly enough, his buddy's 08 or 09 V6 Mustang was just as close of a race.

Unfortunately I did not. There will for sure be an after dyno. I just hate to dyno a truck with a blown head gasket and then claim it picked this much hp/tq, knowing it was down on power to begin with. I will be getting 1/8th mile track times this Friday however. Just for kicks tho, nothing that will be used as a comparison.

I wish I knew y'all were looking for a guinea pig, I would have been more than happy to oblige, though my now blown, burn, destroyed 5.3l will need to be replaced, I still have the supporting cast in place, like FLT Stage 4 w/Vig 3400, Eaton Posi, and Yukon 4.10's.

Like any older motor, things are going to happen, parts are going to wear out, and gaskets are going to fail. Such is the case with one particular Crew Cab Sillverado we have here at the shop. The tired 160,000 mile 5.3L gave up a head gasket, and we decided we would like to take this as an opportunity to increase performance without affecting drive-ability and trying to keep a premium on fuel mileage --- sometimes easier said than done when you have a lead-foot that likes the feel of increased power!
Test Truck is a 2004 Crew Cab w/ a 5.3L, 4L60e, and G80 equipped 3.42 geared 10 bolt.
We will be using the GMPP LS327 Short Block for this build.
Replacing the stock heads with CNC ported SDPC 62cc 5.3L sporting 2.00/1.55 LS1 Valves, LS6 Springs, and 220cc intake ports. (SD8926C)
The LS327 utilizes the 2001 F-Body LS1 camshaft. However, we will be replacing that w/ a SDPC HT1 Hot Truck Camshaft which specs out @ 214/218 .559/.562 on a 111 LSA.
We will be using a a GMPP CAI to bring in cooler air and a set of Pacesetter LTs & Y-Pipe to scavenge exhaust out to a pre-existing Flowmaster muffler which will be swapped out for a Magnaflow cat-back in the future.
The goal is simple: Increased HP & TQ over stock, great drivability, and some tire smokin' torque; A great upgrade to increase torque for pulling boats, trailers, or car haulers; More power for Test'N'Tune Night at the local dragstrip; Or a cost effective option to replace tired engines.
The swap is being done this weekend and dyno numbers/track times should be up soon!
Keep tuned to see what the results will be!!

I told the hubby I couldn't find the issue, and 5 mins later I get the call, "Come get me".
How you think the fit would be with a set of 60cc Patriot Aluminum Heads would do, and a mild cam 224/224 .581/.581 112lsa would do?
My support cast in in my siggy.
Lisa
PS I maybe calling you relatively soon.
