Default Seeking Camshaft advice

Hi all, sorry it has been over three years since my last post

I recently purchased a 2004 2wd Sierra x-cab with a 4.8L (best I could find on the island). I am looking into putting some power adding supplies to it. I just need some advice from the experts... I plan on the usual CAI, LT's Cat back, Fast Flash and a 4.11 LSD. The truck is a daily driver and the Torque management is horrible ! I would like to know which cam you all would recommend and also would like to know if Fast Flash gets rid of Torque Management.

This is the cam I am thinking would be best: Comp Cam 54-406-11
Here are the specs
Duration @ .05 206/212
Lift 0.515/0.522
LSA 112

The other one is Comp Cam 54-450-11

Duration @ 0.05 206/212
Lift .513/.520
LSA 115°

Main difference is LSA. I am looking for more torque from my 4.8
On island tunning is not an option so Hand held tunner is the only way.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think you would be happy with either of those cams and a stock stall..For a street setup there is not going to be a huge difference in performance between the two..But if you are going to r&r the cam I would put in something a little bigger like the Comp 212/218 558/.563 115lsa..use the yellow ls6 springs and a lower cost TBTC..also with such a mild setup Blackbear or your favorite tuner should be able to get you a good mailorder tune, which will work 10x better
-My company just picked up part of that 18 billion dollar work on the island and my boss is re-locating there..maybe I will end up going for 2 years??

Both those cams are very mild, but either will give you incremental gains over stock without a doubt. I'd pick a grind a little bigger, like what Ribeiro mentioned, or even an LS6 cam, simply because you could find one cheaper than either of the Comps.

I was looking at the ls6 cam, however it has a smaller (base circle?) and I would have to figure out the push rod length right?

I would like a cam that has a choppy idle but can still run the a/c.

So a 212/218 cam would work wonders for my "little engine that could?" I really dont want to mess with a TC. I know that it is small but the potential has to be there to make power, not on the LQ9 side, but way more then what is has now. I can't stand the lag the engine has from the start. I am thinking it is the weak cam and torque management that makes this engine suffer so much.

If there's a cheaper/better cam Please let me know. I appreciate any info. Keep it coming.

The cams that you listed are pretty much what I'm currently running in my 5.3, and there are definite gains over stock while still retaining the factory torque converter (from 16.5@81.7mph to 15.6@89.5mph running on 33" AT's with the same bolt on's both runs). The famous 212/218 would also work, but would definitely benefit from about a 2600 torque converter IMO. As mentioned above, a mail order tune from BlackBear or Wheatley will be night and day better than any handheld, and with BlackBear's "scan cable" tune he could pretty much nail it dead on. Justin at BlackBear tuned my current set up without the scan cable and pretty much nailed it...it's so mild that it's a walk in the park for him

not a chevy but i run a 206/218 502/485 110lsa on my 4.7l sohc ram. and its a bit pepier and i droped from 16.3perfect traction to a 15.11 w/ horible traction w/ just a intake, exhaust and sct tune so either of those would be a good improvement but if i had a 3rd gen chevy small block ide go a lil bit bigger

i know on ours krc went from a 212/218 to a 212/212 grind and kept the peak hp but gained a good chunk more tq

I am getting discouraged. After reading several posts, some 5.3's with extensive mods are only running high 15's. So even after the cam swap, LT's, CAI, Cat Back, Servo, custom tune, 4.11 gears can I even come close to high 14's with my truck?

My very mild 350 powered S-10 hit 14.2. I know the power to weight ratio was higher than my Sierra but...

Is my goal of high 14's even possible with my setup?

Don't get to wrapped up in times. There are a lot of variables that come into play, like elevation, as well as track prep, and weather.

With the mods you mentioned I think its possible, especially with a torque converter. Theres a guy on here that ran a 14.5 with a 4.8 Ex-Cab and I don't think he even had a cam. So like I said, lots of variables every truck is different.

Just start modding it one step at a time and I bet you'll be really happy with the outcome even if you only end up running a 15.0. It will still be alot more fun to drive.
