Default Shimming a converter??

I've had 2 yanks in my truck, my trans installer had to shim my TT3000 with 2 washers, and my SS3800 with 3 washers. Is this common with all converters, or just Yanks?

Anyone else had to shim theirs?

I dont think the tranny shop shimmed mine - I asked him and he acted like he had never heard of doing that

From what I understand, you shim it with washers in between the mounting lugs on the converter, and the flexplate. You look for a clearance the thickness of a nickel. (this is what I'm not quite clear on) I think the clearance is the amount of converter engagement into the pump?? Too much or too little and my trans guys say it will take out the pump.

This is from the most reputable trans place around here(not some quickie trans place) The 2 guys that own the place have been in business for 25 years only doing transmissions and are old school hot rodders. So I hope I can trust them.

Alls I know about the pump engagement is that it needs to be fully seated. I have never heard of this shimming...but I learn stuff all the time.

Yeah, seems like they said if its not fully seated when bolted to the flexplate, then is when you shim.

Like the snub that goes into the pump is too short? If so that does make some sense but I'd assume as long at it is fully seated on the pump it should be okay
