Default Should I go to the track?

Heres the deal, I have a set of 28" Hoosier slicks sitting in my garage, I haven't used them at the track for fear of blowing the trans (stock 60 w/a Transgo - 23k miles).

I've been thinking about going with my street tires, but on the street I cant even go half throttle from a stop w/o spinning...so I think it would be a traction nightmare at the track. The track is about 2 hours away and I dont want to go down there just to spin the whole way down the track and come back with some 14 sec slips

So I've been thinking about trying my luck w/the stock 60 and slicks at the track. The shifts are not too hard, so I'm thinking it might hold together for a few runs

I was going to wait for a rebuild before I attempt the slicks, but I'm tempted to just go and see what happens. I'm going to go out on a limb and say I could maybe run a few high 12s with traction...just really anxious to see what happens.

i dunno .. I would be tempted to take the slicks and just baby it outta the hole. Or just take the street tires and see what it can do in full street trim.

Either way, it should be pretty quick.

I would say go for it. Thats what I did and I got blown up rear end and 4L60. My transmission had a TransGo shift kit as well, but the rear had the factory G80. I used my ET streets on 3 seperate track occassions and probably had around 20 passes total. I don't think 4 or 5 passes will kill your transmission, but it's possible. Just be careful when you burnout. When I would burn out and let go of the brake and the tires finally grabbed, it would hook super hard, could almost feel the stress on the drivetrain. You still have the rather large 3.4 pulley on there?

I say just go to the track and see how it hooks up on the street tires. If you get lousy traction, throw the slick on for a few and see how she does. I'll be at HRP friday night, so let me know it you decide to come down.

Yes its the 3.4

How would you recommend coming out of the burnout w/o grabbing too hard? Just feather the brake? I used ET streets on my previous truck and it never seemed to grab to hard, just kind of screetch....but then again the Hoosiers will probably be stickier....

just roll out of the hole a little before you floor it.or just keep the stock tires on and let some air out.

I don't know man. If you hook and go WOT out of the hole, it might be disasterous. Blower, 3K stall and traction....
Just upgrade you whole drivetrain

I'm really tempted to try the slicks, just take it easy out of the hole - no 2500 launches or anything. My only real concern is the shifts....with no give as far as traction goes. I think I might go and bring the slicks, and try the street tires first and if its ridiculous I'll throw on the Hoosiers.

That's what we all think. I'll try street tires to go easy on the drivetrain. Your 60ft, is pathetic and the time is embarassing. Then you say, well let's put the slicks on and go "easy" on it. Then, you say, hey I can run even faster. Pretty soon people around you are encouraging you to do it and you just do it and say "screw it", run it and see what happens. C'mon now, we all now it's near impossible to resist traction, power, and a bunch of gear heads around you saying, "is that all it's got?".
Just a thought.
