Question Should I install headers?

I am trying to scrounge up the most mileage possible in my truck. I'm no longer looking for more power. I have a set of TOG headers sitting in my garage. Should I install them? How much of an increase should I expect? Like I said, I'm not concerned about the added power. I average about 2500-3200 miles a month That's just for work!!!

I haven't done any mpg check on mods before, but I think you could see 1 or 2mpg better.

I actually lost a little bit with mine because I had to add more fuel.

This is one thing I'm concerned about. Did you do any other mods at the same time? What kind are they?

I've already adjusted my driving habits quit a bit to get better mileage. What sucks is that I actually get the best mpg with the cruise set on 85... But there's only a few places I can do that.

Anyone else saw any changes in mileage when they installed headers?

That was the only mod done at the time. They are Dynatech's.

I didn't lose a whole lot. I can't remember exactly, but I don't think it was even 1/2 mpg. I was just expecting to get an increase so when I actually got a decrease I was a little dissapointed. I would do it again though because it sounds great and I picked up some more power as well. Now that I have my electric fans on i'm back up to 16.5 mpg combined driving and can get 21 mpg on the highway.

You might think about gettig rid of the 160* t-stat if you are wanting to get better economy. Not sure how much it would help, but running cooler isn't that good for economy.

Are you saying it's not good for economy? I think I still have the stock thermostat laying around somewhere. Would I need to get retuned?

When I switched to a 160stat I noticed no difference in mileage, granted I tuned for it... Untuned a 160 will lower your mileage a tad but if its tuned correctly it shouldnt really have a effect.

Yes, I was saying that it was not good for economy, but maybe if tuned properly it won't matter like stated above.

Correct, a tune is needed to take advantage of the lower stat. Higher temps are good for emissions, not economy. With the lower stat you can run more timing, which should actually increase mileage in some cases.
