Default silverado tailgate broke

Hey is there any problems with the Silverado tailgates? I was sitting on mine by my self and both straps broke, and Im not 400 pounds (bout 210)

Is there any better straps or did mine have a MAJOR problem?

What part of them broke? I have had no problem with mine, and I'm 220 And I've never heard of any.

If you look closely, those covered aircraft cables ARE NOT what support the tailgate. They merely act as a back up.

Take a look further down toward the bottom of the bed, you'll see a little cog stop on each side that the bottom of the tailgate rests on when fully down. This is what gave way I'd bet.

As to their weight ability, they aren't meant to hold a lot of weight, but I've had myself (around 250lbs) and a sh*tload of gravel resting on that tailgate without a problem.

I just ordered a 2002 2500HD, and according to the sales literature the "standard" tailgate, for the metal bed, is rated to 600lbs; the composite one is rated to 1000lbs. I remember this because I questioned the salesman about it, but he had no clue as to what I was talking about. Seems a bit odd that the composite tailgate is stronger then the metal one...

As for weight, I have also had an entire 4.8 longblock resting on it while I dragged out of my truck to reach the hoist.

I have had a lot of weight on mine and no problems...

Me at 205
friend at 200
6.0L block at 210

So at least 615 pounds on mine at one time with now problems at all.

Maybe you guys with 1/2 tons aren't as cool as us 3/4 tonners.

Seriously though, Those cables at least on mine are not a load bearing cable.
