The Difference in the 2 engines is the crank and rods. Pistons are the same.

325 = 3.780" x 3.622" ('99-later, Gen.III, "LM7" 5.3 Liter Vortec, 6.098" rod)

293 = 3.780" x 3.27" ('99-later, Gen.III, "LR4" 4.8 Liter Vortec, 6.278" rod)

so crank and rods cost $800 extra? Looks like GM really pulled a fast one with this engine option...

So your saying there are no numbers on the engine itself telling wether it is a 5.3 or 4.8, sounds like i'll be tearing alot of someone's 4.8s down trying to find my 5.3.

Well you can just check the glove compartment for LR4 or LM7, but afaik the block just says 4.8/5.3

You are paying 800.00 for the torque. It doesn't matter how they achieve that. This is standard marketing, that's how the world goes round. Think about this :

A Rockford Fosgate P1-12" Woofer for your truck costs you 79.00.

A Rockford Fosgate P2-12" Woofer for your truck costs you 129.00.

The difference between the two woofers (production costs wise) are minimal, the most expensive difference being the extra magnet weight. You still pay 50.00 more for the other woofer because it performs better, not because it costs more to make. I would think the production cost difference between the two is less than 3.00.

It worked for GM didn't it? How many 4.8 guys are on here? I would say 97% of us are 5.3 or 6.0, we paid the extra cash.

actually, the 4.8 from the factory is the most popular engine, or so I have heard. And come on, $800 for 30 lb ft tq? You could do a simple bolt on or tune and get 30 Tq. Anyways, pretty smart of GM to save a lot of money and make a lot of money I guess. I mean in the past they had the 350 and the 305. They had to build 2 different motors. Now same block, different rotating assembly, $800 price diff.

Ahh yes, the ol' 327 block & 283 crank combo(DZ). The stuff dreams are made of.
