Question Starter won't quit turning motor, even when shut off.

Recently pulled the engine in my 2004 silverado, put a new cam and ported heads in it. I also put in a new torque converter. Now at times when i go to start it, the starter stays engaged. I'll shut the truck off and the starter will continue to turn the engine until I unhook the battery cable.

I know they're suppose to 'automatically' start your engine and disengage when it fires...

This might be of importance. Mixed up on what torque converter to put in (don't ask, just happened, new one is one the way) but my silverado is pretty much stock besides the cam, ported heads, headers & exhaust. It has a TCI super street fighter 3500rpm stall converter, could the heat from this thing mess up my flexplate thus causing the starter to get stuck and not disengage properly?

I have it tuned at roughly a 1050 rpm idle idk if this might be the issue either. It'll start and run up to about 1400rpm then back down, when the starter does what its suppose to. I have the JET Dynamic Spectrum Tuner for it so i can mess with it, so far no trouble codes. Thanks

You might have the connections backwards on the starter, its easy to do , specially when doing an engine swap.

If not i agree its a sticky solenoid.

Sounds good to me...or just Bingo! I agree, the solenoid is probably shorted and staying engaged.

this happened to me.. the starter would just start going as soon as the battery was connected.. turned out the two wires on the solenoid on the starter were touching...(right were 2 wires bolt up next to each other)

sweet, i'll check it out. It didnt stick before the engine was pulled. so i'm thinking it might be a switch of the connections on the starter or the connections touching.

I just didnt know if the flexplate might be messed up or not cause im swapping the converter and if its the flexplate i might as well do that too if it's making it happen. thanks for the input!!

I had one that did the same thing. This thing was quite a challenge to find. It ended up being the neutral safety switch on the transmission. There was a internal short that powered up the solenoid.

there's heat shielding that goes around the solenoid wires, it had gotta pushed onto the ground terminal on the starter. Moved them apart so they quit shorting, no more starter problem.
