Default STS almost done

(posted on ls1truck.com) figured some of the obs trucks might be interested in doing something similar, btw are there any out there? hahah.

I managed to get a few free hours this weekend and install some of the turbo piping. I ended up cutting a lot of the fender up so I didn't have to mess around, that's fine though, I'll get another on and just cut one small hole for the tubing.
The part that goes along the fender isn't done, you'll see a tie strap there, I'll delete the silicon hose and weld those two pipes together and fab a bracket up for some support.
The part that goes under the frame isn't done, I'll get that part from STS (oops, they forgot it), then it will tuck up under the body better.
I went under the frame instead of over it like the newer body style does, I'm talking about the elbos that goes to the turbo. It's nice to sping the turbo to get the positioning just right.
The rearend is the lowest part so far, so no worries there. It should be out of site after I'm done.
I just need to make up some exhaust that goes into the turbo and then install a 3" pipe exiting the stock location. Tomorrow if I have time I'll install the pump , dual stage, and finish the wiring. I ditched the entire harness that comes with the kit, it didn't make any sense to install it under the hood, I made my own, it came out much simplier and is hidden really well, if this was a nbs, no problem the harness would have worked just fine, but not for my truck.

STS Install on OBS

After this is done, I'll take my truck up a few levels in this order:

Methanol kit
6L heads and bring the boost back up
No Cats and headers
N20

I've been out of the scene a while, boy does it feel good to mod the truck again.
The 3.07's (changed from 4.10's) are going to be awesome with the turbo.

This is probably for those who have the obs trucks, this is basically how it's going to turn out for you, not a bad install and btw this kit was a 99-04 EC kit.

later,

allen

I like the way it stays tucked nice and tight up against the frame where it starts to go into the wheel well area. On mine it dips about 3.5" below the frame and would pose a problem on a 4"x6" dropped truck. And cut down on some clearance if you go off road.

thanks trtturbo, now get yours going, hehehe.

FL8Z71, my truck is dropped 2/4 (doesn't seem like it) and it has plenty of clearance as is, but once I get the tube from STS it will look a lot better. Also, there is tons of clearance when the wheel is turned, I was a little concerned at first, but it turned out ok.

Stall speed, I'll try to make it out there, I'm really looking forward to it.

allen

That looks kinda slick. How are the IAT's with that thing mounted that far back and the intake charge having all that pipe to loose the heat?

Wouldn't longer tubes mean more lag as well???

Normaly it would cause a lot of lag, but STS has got the sizing figured out I guess. I think they use a smaller exhaust housing. Here's something to think about:

Conventially mounted turbos rely on heat and velocity of the exhaust gas to spin the turbine. A turbo that is mounted further away doesn't have that benefit. HOWEVER, if you look at the Perfect Gas Law, as the temp of the exhaust gas goes down, the density goes up. Thus being able to provide a greater force to spin the turbine. The velocity is made up in sizing the exhaust housing properly. I'm not sure how they do it, and I imagine they guard that secret closely!

BTW Allen that looks tight, and your truck is going to haul ***! Not that it didn't before. Maybe when you're done mocking it up, they can make a kit for the OBS trucks. Then give you a little kick back. Hehehe

Oh yeah, Call Me!

The IAT's on a Camaro got up to about 160deg with hard driving. I'll be running 5psi for a while, then I'll intercool it.
I can tell you lag isn't an issue! I've been in camaros and trucks and there just isn't enough to think about. The turbo just sits there until you're ready for it.
Plus, without lag you can't enjoy all that power from a turbo.

Thanks for the explanation vanillagorilla,

My IATs never went above 150 at the track and between 125 and 135 towing my camper. By the way that last tune you sent me kicks but. thanks
