You don't have to stay with a GM cam. Stock lifters will also work with aftermarket cams.

Without a doubt, get a tune first.

Than get a cam. Choice will depend on what you want it to do - high torque daily driver or high hp racetrack killer.

If you go for the high torque cam, the stock stall and exhaust manifolds will be adequate. If you go for the high hp, you're going to want a high stall torque converter and long tube headers ("LTs"). Don't know how strict your emissions laws are in Georgia, but an off road "y" pipe without cats would be good to go with the LTs. If you don't get the LTs and ORY at least get a good cat back system to replace the stock pipe and muffler.

If you are looking to perform at the track and don't mind lowering your gas mileage, a set of 4.10 gears would be next.

Hope that this helps - Good luck!

btw, you dont need lifters for any aftermarket cam, but you will need valve springs
