Dont quote me on it but i have heard it could be a cam bearing issue.

My VHO's LQ9 6.0L has that whine I think your taking about in the upper mid and high rpm range. It has done it since I bought it. It does sound like a stock Ford Lightning motor a little bit. Has done this for 24,000mi now.
I too have been curious of what it is. It does sound like the power steering pump to me, but I could be wrong.

Hmmmm The A/C clutch is interesting. I was getting something to eat today, and I thought I could hear a squeaking coming from the compressor, went away when the compressor kicked on.

I doubt the power stearing pump, though it may be low on fluid. Its the same one from the 5.3.

Its got the same belt form the 5.3 also a Gates I believe, and its a 2002 engine so it should be the short crank (or whatever)

I was thinking possibly a pushrod issue, but it just doesnt sound the same as short pushrods, but I dont really have any reasoning to this, just that Ive done quite a few cam swaps, and most sound like a Singer, not a charger.

Pull the a/c belt off - that should tell you real quick if it's the compressor.
