I have just experienced the exact situation as Stove.

Here are my details.

I have a 2002 Chevy Avalanche with a 5.3L engine.

I just tried my tuner today for the second time. The first time it went fine without a problem but I reset the truck back to stock yesterday because I thought I was going to be getting different size tires. I just received the tuner on Wednesday.

I attempted to program my Avalanche today with disastrous results.
I followed the instructions on the sheet.
First I pressed "A" and removed the speed limiter. Then I made Tire Size corrections for my 35" tires. After that the screen returned to the main menu. I then pressed yes and proceeded to let the tuner enter the programmining cycle.
The first screen stated that it was storing my vehicles stock settings. That took about 3 minutes. After that, the screen said that it was beginning to program the new settings. Only one star came up on the current process screen when the unit beeped 3 times and said that there is no response from PCM and to check that the ignition was on and to check the cable. Nothing had moved jarred or switch on or off prior to this. I frantically tried to make sure that the plug was seated in the Data Link Connector and the other end securely attached to the tuner. I tried pressing different buttons on the tuner to see if that would change the screen which it did not.

At this time I had no choice but to unplug the unit and re plug it back in. I went through the programming mode again and this time it just said that there was no response from the PCM.

I turned the ignition off and removed the cable. Now, the vehicle will not start.. The starter cranks but the truck will not run.

I tried the procedure 3 more times and even disconnected the battery for 20 minutes in hopes that the PCM would reset. Nothing changed.. I had to leave my truck parked on the street and get a ride home.

I will say that I also followed the instructions step by step. I have Onstar and nowhere in the instructions does it mention anything about Onstar. I am positive that this is not a case of operator error.

Since it is the weekend, I can't get a hold of anyone at Superchips.

I am pretty confident that I will need to have the truck towed to the dealer. I will not mention anything about using a programmer.

If this is a problem that is encountered using Superchips Max Micro Tuners then I will most likely be returning it for a refund.

Man I am glad I got the Hypertech after hearing about all these people having trouble with "Supershits" locking up their PCM's. I have used mine about 15 times now with no trouble at all. You guys should tell Superchips to pay for the damages.

ONSTAR seems to be the problem in all these cases. Dunno about Supershits, but my Hypercrap has detailed instructions how to temporarily disable the ONSTAR by pulling the right fuses. It states that when the ignisiton is on, ONSTAR periodically communicates with the PCM and that interrrupts the programming process. I had no problems to program my PCM after disconnecting ONSTAR in my Sub. Also, the HPP instructions state NOT to have a charger installed when programming. Just start with a fully charged battery and turn the DRLs off by pushing the interior light switch three to four times.

I've good luck with my Hypertech too. Only gave me trouble one time. The truck had been sitting for a few hours and when I went to program, the hypertech said something about not enough power to run the unit. I thought I was screwed. I turned off the ignition and unplugged the programmer. Then I started the truck and it ran fine. Now whenever I plan on doing a reprogram, I run the truck for awhile so that the battery is at full charge. Haven't had a problem since.

I don't know if this happened during any of these programming processes or not though. The datalink's fuse is the cig. lighter fuse.

Hypothetical situation, lets say you hate the way your PCM is functioning, dealer uploaded a new program that you hate. How do you disable the PCM so they have to install another one? Without being to malicious. How can you make it so they can not communicate with the PCM anymore and are forcd to replace it? I do not have the HPP3 or any other device. Just wires.
