swapped to UPD from K&N FIPK on my 5.3
I've been running the K&N FIPK since the end of January of this year, and I was used to how the truck felt with it while driving around, as well as while pulling the car and trailer. After seeing Greg's results w/ the UPD, I decided to give it a shot. First off, I REALLY like the look of the kit! It keeps the air filter completely enclosed vs. the FIPK letting the filter suck in hot air from under the hood (even w/ the divider they provide). The kit was also super easy to install. The FIPK wasn't hard, but it was more time-consuming.
The first immediate difference was in the sound. The UPD is quite a bit quieter than the FIPK under acceleration, but it still has a nice, quiet growl to it. I seemed to notice a little difference in bottom-end torque as well. I pulled the SS to the track today, and the bottom-end torque was more pronounced. Anyone that has pulled a car and trailer w/ a stock torque converter knows what it's like getting stuck at the bottom of the next gear right after it changes (except for you 6.0L, 8.1L, and Duramax guys). Well, the UPD seems to pull through it better compared to the FIPK. I'm going to fill the truck up tomorrow so I can compare gas mileage while towing; it was full when I left this morning.
I'm loving the new induction setup. It's a major bargain considering you can currently get one on special for $199! It's cheaper, looks better IMO, and seems to perform better. FYI, the induction is the only performance mod done to my truck; everything else is currently stock. If you've been looking or thinking about an induction for your truck, I recommend that you take the plunge with the UPD! You won't be disappointed.
