Default swapping to a 5.3 (several tuning issues)

thinking of swapping a 5.3 into my 02 4.8L silverado (yeah i know the 6.0/5.7 is where its at but i've been offered an AMAZING deal on this motor and i jus wanna get rid of the torque-less terror 4.8). i have several questions:

1. how will it run with the stock tuning (not sure if there's a difference or not)
2. how will it run with an HPP3 (the hypertech would still think there's a 4.8 due to the vin#)

3. i've heard a stock LS1 cam will provide gains on the 5.3s but only certain years. which years LS1 cams are they? or are the gains to small to even worry about?

I can help you quiestion #3.
All ls1 cams provide a nice gain on lm7's. I belive Allen got 6 tenths of sec on the .25 by installing an ls1 cam on a 99 5.3
Here are the cam specs:

5.7 or 6.0 would be better

it will run fine, just slap it in and enjoy the extra power.

Not to hyjack this thread, but would the truck run decent enought to get it 30 miles to allen futral if you were to swap out a 5.7 or 6.0 instead? from a 4.8 to a 5.7 or 6.0 would it be capable of making a decent trip to get tuned? Just wondering cuz ill prolly be helping crazyidiot with the swap.

yes, it would run fine...well it'll run anyway, well enough to drive around without any issues. Hell, I've seen guys drive with 236+ duration cams on stock tunes, don't worry about it, you'll be fine.

ok i've found out that the heads have been taken off the motor but nothing was done to them. any kinda cheap headwork i should look into before putting them back on? i'll prolly be throwing a 98-2000 ls1 cam in before putting the motor in as well.
