Default Syclone buildup?

What is everyones opinion on a Syclone buildup? Will be sometime from now, but I got a promotion and a little bit of a raise yesterday and it should help me out some in curing my mod and speed bug.

I have been looking into things today to try and see what would be involved in making a syclone a true V6 beast.

Tell me if you think doing a buildup of a Syclone to say....a 10 sec truck... would be worth the trouble...effort....and money.

Also if you know anyone "personaly" who has been down this road feel free to comment.

A good friend of mine from church has an awesome black Typhoon (SUV version... same motor/drivetrain) His is extremely fast with just a few mods. It doesnt take much money to make that car go very fast, and the stock turbo can put out a ton of boost without hurting the engine too much. You can launch that thing soo hard too, the AWD system is awesome!
I would go for it... it would be an awesome sleeper truck, especially if you took of the Syclone badges!
Good luck,
-Kurt

I'm pretty sure it has been done numerous times. I wanted one of those things so bad but, when they came out I couldn't afford one.

They are relatively heavy trucks and it is going to take some big horsepower to get one in the 10's. The turbo motor can definately make the power but, some of the parts are exspensive. From what I remember the crank is the weakest part in the motor since it has splayed journals. It's not like a standard SBC crank where both rods are on common journals. It's like that so that the motor has an even 60° of rotation between firings. You can get an odd fire crank that is very strong but VERY exspensive and requires computer work(maybe an aftermarket computer).

I think most of the really fast trucks have ditched the AWD system for RWD only, because the viscous clutch can only hold so much power. There may be some running that fast with the AWD though. It's been a long time since I really was into the sy and ty.

I think the website to check would be www.syty.net . If you need answers that is the best place to get them.

If you pursue this project let us know. I still love those trucks.

I was looking into the oddfire stuff. Also...it did look like most people were just using chips in their trucks. If I went though with this I would go for and entirely worked over motor and a larger turbo. Maybe a twin turbo setup so I can stay with a turbo that will spool up quick. Would also no matter what want to go with a F.A.S.T. computer system so everything will be able to be controlled and I could load programs at will without any worries.

i have friends that are into the turbo thing on there cars. from what i know, twin turbos do spool up faster, but one large turbo creats a whole lot more boost and in the 1/4 mile, i would go with the large because once it does spool up your gone. even if you want you can spray a 50 shot of N2O to help spool up the large singel turbo.

for help with the turbo, get a turbo timer, it will help save the life of the turbo if you know anything about them. and of course im sure you know what a boost controler is, that will make a huge difference, adjustable to what ever boost that you want.

definately do it! those things are rare enough stock let alone modified. just use one turbo though, that seems to be the going thing with the G/N's around dallas. come to kellers sometime on a nice weekend and you are sure to see at least a couple of them.

Figured you were from around here Brad

I think I answered most of your questions on syty.net though.

As far as twin vs single, I'm pro-single, and have dealt with both.

You have 2 turbos, 2 wastegates, 2 oil feeds, 2 oil returns, more plumbing (intercooler), more exhaust (2 downpipes) and also, 2 turbos now soaking up heat. I've been told by several turbo gurus that a single turbo will be more efficient than a twin. A twin on a Syty is a PITA if you stay AWD, since the propshaft is in the same area your 2nd turbo would be in. Underhood space is at a premium in these trucks too, plumbing becomes a nightmare if not done right.

With a Syclone/Typhoon, a 72-74-76 sized turbo will spool fine on the right buildup, with great drivability, and will support 600-900hp. You almost start sizing the turbo for traction control, really. I ran a 63 on my old 11.0 Sy, then a 72, have tuned another with a 72, a Ty with a 76, a Ty with twin 60s, yada yada yada. Overall, the one Syclone I tuned with the 72 drove like stock (well better actually, with some good tuning) until you stomped it, and then all hell broke loose. That was a 600-700hp truck, sounded as mild as a stocker too.

As far as the Syty's go... there are a lot of misconceptions regarding them, so make sure you do your homework before making any decisions (looks like you are )

Oh also, since you're going FAST, I believe I have some good 75# & 83# injector programs for some high HP builds.. they'd give you a good startup program when/if ya need 'em.

The aftermarket, or large ownership groups, aren't out there, like the LS1's have, but if you have some wrenching & tuning skills, you can go really fast and freak some people out with a Syty.

Oh if you guys are bored, you can check out my buddy's video: http://www.turbogm.com/Videos/Syclone/Tony's%2010.71%20@%20126.mpg

His Syclone buildup - stock block, stock crank, forged pistons, late model iron heads - unported with small valves, stock exhaust manifolds. 72 series turbo, 75# injectors, stock ECM, sumped stock fuel tank. Completely stock suspension, with drag radials all around, 1.53 60' time
27psi of boost on 116 octane, lots of tuning.

Here's one of my old videos:

Unfortunately the current Syclone is much closer to stock; should be in the mid-high 11s this year.

Been doing a lot of research on them today and I think I have decided to try and sink myself into doing it. I have found a few trucks for sale that could be possibilities. Going to call one of the main motor builders for the syclones etc. and talk with him tomorrow morning to help clear up some things (this guy makes 1000hp V6 syclones....holy crap!). Then I'll be making things happen to get myself in the position to start a project like this. Not going to be a fast paced project at all. Put I will keep everyone posted.

bgreen...Thank you again for your help. It has helped me out with a lot of things today. I'll be getting with a few people to see whats going to be possible using my current resources of shops and so on. I'm sure I'll be keeping in touch with you when I begin to make some progress.

Also...if you don't mind...what part of Chicago are you in? I make a few trips up there every year. Normally stay in downtown near Halsted and West Randolph
