Then engine will run cooler, reduses the tendency for the engine to detonate, less heat under the hood, cooler air coming into the engine, i think you can advance the timing if you have a cooler t-stat. All equals a bit more power ........hope that helps

Since you have an 04 you can NOT rebuild the stat youself like you can with the pre 04 type which can be taken apart. GM changed them in 04 and the old style won't fit in because GM make slightly larger maybe just so they wouldn't fit I guess. You can get them from Lingenfelter. TByrne says they have them too, but which ever one you get be SURE it's stamped 82 C if you want a 160 F stat. If someone sells you one that they say is a 160 F stat and it is stamped 96 C you've been had. I found out about this stuff after buying another Silverado which is an 04. I bought what I was told was a 160 F stat from SDPC only to find out it was a stock 190 F stat once I put it on the stove in water and monitored it with a digital thermometer. I put it on the stove to be sure it would open at 160 F which it didn't and "Upon further review" I saw it was stamped 96 f which equals 190 F. SDPC did make it right and I hope they are no longer selling those 04 stats as if they are 160 F. I was hoping everything would be interchangeable to my 99 Silverado. Most stuff is, but the stat is not and the 04 is drive by wire like the Corvettes so it doesn't have a TPS or IAT. I guess that means I need an updated version of AutoTap. You will find that your operating temp drops to 185 F after you install the 160 F stat as long as the vehicle is moving. Once you get into stop and go traffic the temp slowly climbs until you get moving again. I already installed the Flex-a-lite 292s, ASP pulley, 160 F stat and AEM Brute Force Cold Air Induction and descreened my MAF while installing the Brute Force. The truck is running great. I would highly recommend these mods if you are the type that can do them yourself. I did almost all of the mods on my 99 at least on the top end so this external stuff is a breeze for me now.

The temp goes up to about 195 F in traffic or slightly higher if you sit for a long time with the A/C "ON". The 292s are a direct bolt in. One nice feature is that they ramp up as the water temp increases. Once you decide what you want your "SET POINT" to be you fans come "ON" at that temp at 60% speed and if the temp continues to rise the speed gradually goes up as the temp goes up. If your set point is 185 F your fans are at 60% once the engine warms to 185 F. By the time the water temp gets to 195 F the fans will be at 100%. At highway speeds the fans are "OFF" so over about 30 mph the fans put no load on the engine.
